Ravana goes to fight - Chapter 19

In the previous chapter, we saw The lamentations of the Rakshasis. , Now we'll see Ravana goes to fight.

Ravana heard all these lamentations of the rakshasas and got all angrier. He looked so fearful and his eyes were so red and could burn things as they were. In his anger, he could not speak clearly. He ordered the chiefs Mahodara, Mahaparshwa and Virupaksha to start and lead their army. They all ‘chanted Vedic Mantras’ for the benefit of the soldiers and left. It may look a bit paradoxical that the Rakshasas chanted the Vedas but they were all well-read as their king Ravana too was. Ravana addressed them and said that soon he was going to send Rama and Lakshmana to the world of Yama (death) with his arrows and take revenge for the loss of dear ones. He said that all the Vanaras were going to fall on the ground with his arrows stuck on their face as the lotus flower would fall with their stem and decorate the earth. He ordered his chariot. All the chiefs collected the soldiers from every house in Lanka (the loss was so heavy that they had to recruit rakshasas) and followed Ravana to the war field. Many with ugly faces and fearful looks joined the army carrying their powerful and dreadful weapons such as Tridents, swords, axes, and so on. Valmiki says that there were hundreds of thousands of rakshasas, chariots, and elephants who marched to the war field. A special chariot drawn by eight horses was brought from the skies for Ravana. It was shining and glowing like fire. They all came out of the city through the gate where Rama and Lakshmana were waiting. At that time several ill omens were seen. Indra poured a rain of blood; the horses tripped and fell down, and a vulture landed on the flag flying on Ravana’s chariot. It was as if everything announced the death. But Ravana who was destined to die did not mind any of these bad signs. The Vanara army attacked but Ravana caused great damage to them with his powerful arrows. They could not resist Ravana’s attacks and died massively.

In the next chapter, We'll see the Killing of Virupaksha.
