At that time the great Sage Agastya who was there watching the war between Rama and Ravana observed that Rama too was exhausted. So the sage came to Rama and taught him a prayer to Sun God. This is the well-known “Aditya Hrudayam”. It is believed that if one chants this mantra it would bring prosperity and good health.
The sage Agastya approached
Rama and told him that he would teach him Adityahrudaya, a prayer to Sun God
which if chanted by him would remove all the obstacles and give him all wealth
and courage. This is a prayer that praises the Sun. Sun is described as the
remover of all obstacles and destroyer of enemies. I give below some
interesting points from this prayer.
The Sun is ruling the skies.
He is golden while rising and it burns everything during the day. He is kind to
all. He is the chief of the stars and planets. He is supposed to represent
twelve Gods (Indra, Dhata, Bhagha, Busha, Mitra, Varuna, Aryama, Archis, Vivashwa,
Dwashtha, Savita, and Vishnu). He wakes up the lotus flower. He destroys
ignorance and is a witness to the doings of all the people. He destroys the
world and He also creates it. He dries everything. He creates the rains by his
rays. When the world sleeps He is awake (could mean that the Sun never sets!).
Of interest is to note that the Sun is described as fire and is supposed to be
in the center of the Universe. He has seven horses. Some interpreted this saying
that they refer to the seven colors in the Sunlight. I do not think this is
correct.
Agastya asked Rama to chant this mantra and face the enemy and he would be the victor and then he left the place. Rama was very happy. He chanted the mantra thrice and his mind was cleared. He felt new strength in him to face Ravana. Then Lord Surya blessed Rama and asked him to hurry and kill Ravana.
