Indrajit decided to fight an illusory war in which he was a great expert in order to kill Rama and Lakshmana. He created an image of Sita (Maya Sita) and came with her in his chariot to attack the Vanaras. Hanuman saw the chariot and came with a huge rock to hurl at him. But he saw Rama’s beloved Sita with him. She was covered with dust and dressed in rags and dirty clothes and looking very dejected. Hanuman wondered what his plans were. As Hanuman and others were watching Indrajit dragged Maya Sita who cried ‘Rama, Rama’ and took his sword and cut her. Hanuman was so shocked and tears swelled in his eyes. In great anger Hanuman shouted to Indrajit “You great sinner you who were born in the family of Brahmarishi, how could you kill Sita who had followed her husband to the forest sacrificing her life in the palace? What harm did she do to you? I will not leave you unpunished for this crime of killing a woman. So saying, he rushed at Indrajit along with the Vanaras but they were attacked by the rakshasas. Indrajit told Hanuman “The purpose for which Rama came here with Sugreeva and you came here is now defeated. After Sita I am going to kill you all and also Vibheeshana”. All the Vanaras saw Sita being killed and drowned in a sea of sorrow. Of course, Hanuman and the Vanaras did not realize that it was not the real Sita who was killed and who was safe in Lanka. Indrajit was rejoicing for what he had done and laughed loudly. Hearing this, the Vanaras started running away. Hanuman asked them not to run away like cowards but to join him to attack and fight the rakshasas. A fierce battle started. Hanuman hurled a huge rock at Indrajit’s chariot but it missed the chariot, which was moving very fast, and fell beside creating a big crater on the ground and crushing many rakshasas. Indrajit counter-attacked with arrows wounding many Vanaras. Hanuman ordered his army to return to the base and said, “Let us inform Rama and Sugreeva that Sita Devi had been killed and then wait for their orders”. Indrajit saw them retreating to where Rama was and he went to his Yaga Sala to prepare his Yajnya . He did this to gain strength and power for further fighting. He offered blood and meat to the fire, which glowed brightly. Indrajit was well versed in such rituals and he said that he was offering prayers for the welfare of the rakshasas.
It is of interest to comment
on such illusory warfare. In the great Epic Mahabharata also we find a
similar event. Salva waged a war in Dwaraka when Lord Krishna was away in
Hastinapura to attend the great Rajasuya Yaga performed by Yudhishtira and
caused great damage. Meanwhile, Lord Krishna returned and faced Salva. Salva was
well-trained in illusory warfare and he created a scene where he brings Lord
Krishna’s father Vasudeva and cuts off his head. Even Lord Krishna believed in
it and lost his heart for a while. Then he woke up from this illusion and fought
with Salva who was in his Vimana called Saubha and killed him.
