Vibheeshana looked at Ravana who was lying dead on the
ground killed by Rama and overpowered by grief. He lamented that Ravana who
was such a great king was lying on the ground with his gold crown. He said “You
the great hero did not heed my advice and have reached this sad end. Neither
you nor your sons and other chiefs who were blinded by the pride did not take
my advice. The great elephant Ravana which was infatuated was killed by the
lion prince Rama of the Ikshvaku family”. Rama consoled Vibheeshana and said
“Ravana did not die like a coward. He fought fearlessly and faced death. One
should not feel sad about the death of such heroes.
A hero either kills his enemy or gets killed by him and that is the Dharma of Kshatriya. Therefore you should think of other duties that await you”. Vibheeshana told Rama “Ravana had defeated Lord Indra but lost his life facing you. He had done great penances and given away a lot of wealth as charity. I wish to do his last rites and please advise me on this”. Rama said “The enmity disappears with the death. I did my duty and now Ravana is to me as he is to you. So you perform the last rites of Ravana”. Rama was indeed magnanimous in the way he had pardoned Ravana and did not bear any hatred or enmity towards him.
