At that time Rama’s charioteer Matali made a request to
Rama. He reminded Rama and said, “Lord why are you fighting Ravana as though you
are not aware of things. The hour of his death as determined by the Devas has
come. Therefore Lord you use the Brahmastra on him, and finish him”. Then Rama,
thanks to Matali’s suggestion, recalled how when he visited Sage Agastya he had
given him the weapon Brahmasrta that he had got from Lord Brahma. That weapon
which was created for Lord Indra was very powerful and would never go a waste
when employed against the enemy.
It was capable of even blowing up mountains. Rama mounted this astra in his bow and chanted the appropriate mantras. While he was doing so, the whole world shook and all the living things were terrified. Rama drew his bow and sent the astra on Ravana. It straight went to the chest of Ravana and blew it apart and then returned to Rama as a servant would after accomplishing his master’s command. Ravana was killed, his bow fell off his hands and he fell on the ground from his chariot. The Rakshasas saw this and were terrified and ran away from the war field. The Vanaras attacked them with trees and caused more misery for them. A good breeze blew and Dundubi, Deva’s instrument was played in the skies and they showered flowers on Rama. All the worlds rejoiced at the death of the wicked Ravana who was a terror to them and who was harassing them all along with no one to check. Lakshmana, Sugreeva, and others approached Rama who was looking glorious and praised him. Rama himself shone like Lord Indra surrounded by all.

In the next chapter, We'll see Vibheeshana mourns his brother Ravana.
