They reached the forest and saw a mighty rakshasa army wait- ing there. Vibheeshana saw them and told Lakshmana “Let the Vanara army start attacking the Rakshasa army. Ravana’s son Indrajit would be assuming a different form. You should hurry to kill him before he completes the Yajnya”. Lakshmana accordingly started showering his arrows on the enemy and the Vanara army attacked the enemy with rocks, trees, claws, and nails. The Rakshasas faced the enemy and attacked fiercely with swords, tridents, and so on. They raised such a loud noise that it resounded everywhere and everything trembled. There was a great loss on both sides.
Indrajit saw this and got up
from his Yajnya without being able to complete it. He came out and rode his
chariot and started destroying the Vanara army. Hanuman was killing the
rakshasas by smashing them with huge trees. He was also wounded by rakshasas
who used various kinds of sharp weapons against him. Valmiki again mentions the
weapon ‘Mudgara’ made of iron (Ayasa). This as I have said before is important
to note because some researchers contend that iron was not known even to the Harappan civilization which is much more recent in times.
Indrajit directed his
chariot to Hanuman and attacked him with weapons. Hanuman resisted those
dreadful weapons and told Indrajit “If you have courage, face me and you will
not be able to return alive. If you can resist me then you would be the most
distinguished among the Rakshasas”. Vibheeshana saw this and asked Lakshmana to
go and fight Indrajit and kill him. Lakshmana then noticed Indrajit who was
standing mighty and roaring loudly.
