Vibheeshana’s intervention - Chapter 30

In the previous chapter, we saw Hanuman’s advice to Ravana. , Now we'll see Vibheeshana’s intervention.

Ravana’s brother Vibheeshana who was hearing all this intervened and requested Ravana to calm down. He said that it was not befitting a great king like him to kill a messenger because he simply carried the message. He said that no law would allow the killing of a messenger but one could think of giving a suitable punishment. Vibheeshana said “If Hanuman is killed no one would come to know what had happened and Ravana would have missed a great opportunity of fighting a war with the princes and punishing them as they should be. So, Oh great king, you give Hanuman a suitable punishment such as disfiguring him”. Ravana thought over what his brother said. He feared that Hanuman was probably a creation of Lord Vishnu for his destruction or perhaps he was even Brahma himself.

Ravana told his brother that he was right and one should think of a suitable punishment for the messenger. He said that Hanuman’s tail was burnt because the monkeys consider it a beautiful thing and were proud of it. If Hanuman returned home without his tail he would be put to shame. So Ravana ordered that Hanuman’s tail be set on fire and wanted him to be taken around in the streets of Lanka so that all could see it.

In the next chapter, We'll see Hanuman set fire to Lanka.
