Sugreeva’s story - Chapter 04

In the previous chapter, we saw the Friendship between Rama and Sugreeva begins to flower. , Now we'll see Sugreeva’s story.

Sugreeva encouraged Rama and asked him to be cheerful and optimistic. He took the liberty of advising Rama because he said he did it in the capacity of his dear friend. Rama asked Sugreeva to help him find Sita and asked him what he could do in return for Sugreeva who then opened out his heart to Rama. He told Rama how he had earned the enmity of his brother Vali.

Once Vali was challenged by a rakshasa called Mayaavi and a fight ensued. Mayaavi unable to face Vali ran and entered through a hole and hid in a big cave. Vali also entered the cave asking his brother Sugreeva who had accompanied him to wait for him at the entrance till he returned. Sugreeva waited one year and one day he saw blood gushing forth from the cave and a loud noise made by the rakshasa. He misunderstood it and thought Vali had been killed. So he hurriedly closed the cave with a huge rock and returned. The ministers forced Sugreeva and crowned him as king because the country needed a king. So Sugreeva accepted it. But one day Vali returned and got very angry with his brother for having usurped his kingdom. He accused his brother for having trapped him in the pit. He said that after killing Mayavi he could not come out because Sugreeva had closed the exit with a big rock with bad intention and he had to smash the rock and come out. Sugreeva explained what really had happened and asked his forgiveness. But Vali was not to be appeased and he chased him out of his kingdom and married by force his wife Ruma. Sugreeva left and took refuge in Rishyamooka Mountain to escape from Vali. Sugreeva requested Rama to save him from Vali and Rama promised that he would kill Vali the moment his eyes were set on him.

The reason why Vali could not go to Rishyamooka is because of a curse he had incurred from the Rishi Matanga. Once Vali fought with a mighty rakshasa called Dundubhi who had the form of a buffalo. He was harassing every one as he was very powerful. Vali killed him and kicked the dead rakshasa with his foot with such a force that it fell far away. Unfortunately it fell near Rishi Matanga’s ashram. The rishi got so angry that he cursed that the vanara who had polluted his ashram if he ever came to that area would die. Vali pleaded to be excused but the rishi refused. Therefore Vali left that place and dared not enter that region. Therefore Sugreeva was safe only in that region.

Then in order to prove the strength of Rama Sugreeva showed the remains of Dundubhi and asked if Rama could displace it. Rama with his toe gave it a push and it went very far and fell down. Sugreeva begged Rama to excuse him for this test but said that since Vali was so powerful that he wanted to be sure of a victory. Then Sugreeva still not convinced said that Vali could pierce a kind of tree called Aacha / Tala tree and asked how about Rama trying it. Rama shot an arrow and pierced not one but seven of them in a row. Sugreeva was speechless when he saw that and begged Rama to forgive him for having tested his strength. Rama then asked Sugreeva to go along with him to Kishkindha and call Vali for a fight.

They went to a forest nearby Kishkindha and stood behind the trees. Sugreeva called loudly and challenged Vali. Vali was annoyed and came out and a fearful fight took place between them. Rama with the bow in his hand watched attentively but was unable to distinguish between them so could not shoot his arrow. He was scared of using his single arrow to kill the wrong person. Sugreeva was beaten up and in order to save his life he ran away to his refuge.

Sugreeva asked Rama why he had let him down and did not come to his help and said that he was very much hurt by Vali. Rama explained to him the reason why he did not intervene in the fight. Rama said that they both resembled so much in many details that he was confused and did not want to make the grave mistake of killing his friend and ally. Rama then asked Lakshmana to put a garland of flowers called ‘Gajapushpi’ around the neck of Sugreeva as an identifying mark and then they all went again to Kishkindha.

Sugreeva again challenged Vali. Vali got furious and started to go and meet the challenge. Vali’s wife Tara stopped him saying that Sugreeva was surely planning something cunning because though he had been beaten once he still had come again to fight. Tara said that Sugreeva probably had someone to help him. She further said that she heard a rumor from their son Angada that Ikshvaku princes had come to help Sugreeva. She said that it was not advisable to fight against Rama. She advised him to make friends with Rama and also with Sugreeva. But Vali was bent upon killing his brother.

In the next chapter, We'll see Rama kills Vali.
