Rama kills Vali - Chapter 05

In the previous chapter, we saw Sugreeva’s story. , Now we'll see Rama kills Vali

Vali told his wife that he was sure that Rama had no reason to kill him and that he had to answer the challenge of Sugreeva. They both started fighting. Vali was totally unaware of Rama’s presence who was watching. Sugreeva got a good beating and was getting exhausted and he was looking here and there. Rama understood and sent a powerful arrow, which hit Vali like thunder.

Vali fell down but did not die, thanks to the gold chain he was wearing which had been given to him by his father Indra. Rama and Lakshmana approached Vali and he started to speak harshly to Rama. Vali said “Rama you are famous that you never swerve from the path of Dharma. Then why did you kill me when I had done no harm to you? I should have heeded the advice of Tara. You are only a hypocrite being in a hermit’s dress and killing me. I cannot understand how the great king Dasharatha got you as his son. You killed me remaining invisible to me. If you had asked me I would have gotten back Sita from Ravana in a day. I think what you did is against Dharma unless you explain and convince me to the contrary”.

Rama told Vali that he had no right to speak of Dharma as he himself did not follow it. Rama said, “Vali you have been doing things which are contrary to dharma. You should know that you should treat your younger brother like a son. You chased him away and have married by force his wife Ruma who is like your daughter-in-law. I am from the Ikshvaku dynasty and Lakshmana and I represent Bharata who is now the king in Ayodhya. It is our duty to establish dharma and punish the one who acts against it. So I have punished you for your crime and have no regrets. At the same you are now absolved of your crime because you have been punished for your crime”. Rama continued, “Kings hunt animals even unseen by them. You are a vanara and hence I consider you as a kind of animal species. So even by this account, I have not done anything wrong. You do not realize what dharma is and you are scolding me”.

Vali calmed down and saluted Rama with folded hands and said, “You spoke the truth. I said things out of my ignorance, and kindly forgive me for that. I request you to pardon me for my crime”. He added that he was not worried about dying and he requested Rama to protect his son Angada who would miss his father. He wanted Rama to love him as his brother. And he requested Rama also to protect his wife Tara from Sugreeva who might ill-treat her. Rama assured Vali that he would take care of them and that he need not worry at all. Vali swooned after this.

Vali’s wife Tara heard about her husband’s fate and rushed to the spot where he lay and wept bitterly. She said that in spite of her repeated warnings not to fight with Rama, Vali did not pay attention and hence met with that fate. She said there was nothing that held her to live in the world and hence she would enter the pyre of her husband and die. She presented a miserable sight. Hanuman came and consoled her and told her that no one was eternal in this world and it was in the order of things that there is the birth and death cycle in this world. He also told her that she must live to take care of her son Angada. Tara replied that a thousand Angada could not replace Vali for her.

Then she approached Rama and told him that life without her beloved husband would be unbearable, a fact which was only too well known to Rama and asked him to kill her too. She said Vali would be happy if she joined him. But Rama explained to her about life and about destiny. He also told her that when Angada was crowned prince she would surely find consolation.

Vali was still alive so he woke up and could see only Sugreeva. He told him that he was sorry to have troubled his brother and asked forgiveness. He asked Sugreeva to take good care of his dear son Angada and also his wife Tara. Then Vali breathed his last. Sugreeva was in great grief. He said that he had done a great crime. Sugreeva said “My brother never wanted to kill me but he had asked me to go away. But I asked Rama to kill him so I have committed the greatest crime and I have no salvation and I am not fit to be even the prince. I have made Angada fatherless”. He asked Rama to let him die. He said that the Vanaras would accomplish the duty of finding Sita. Rama consoled him.

Rama asked Lakshmana to arrange for the funeral and the funeral rites were done according to the rules. Vali was cremated with great honors.

The Vali Vadham or killing of Vali by Rama is one of the most important events in Ramayana and has been much discussed. The fact that Rama undercover killed Vali while he was fighting with Sugreeva is a topic of hot debate even today. Several versions of Ramayana give varying accounts of this episode. But if one follows only Valmiki’s version which is the original one then one could say the following. There is no clear mention of Rama hiding himself to kill Vali in Valmiki’s version. Vali and Sugreeva fought running around hurling trees and rocks at each other and did not stand in one place. Valmiki says that Sugreeva was so much beaten that he stood and looked around. It was at that time that Rama shot his arrow at Vali and not when he was engaged in a fight with Sugreeva. It cannot be said that Vali was unaware of the presence of Rama because Tara had warned him about the rumors of Rama coming to help Sugreeva. Finally, Rama as the representative of Bharata who was the ruler punished Vali for his crimes.

Before concluding this section a word about Vali and Sugreeva would be in order. Aruna is the charioteer of Sun and he turned into a woman due to a curse and took the name Aruni. She bore a son from Indra who is Vali. Then she bore another son from Sun who is Sugreeva. These two were raised in the Ashram of Gautama Rishi. The king of Kishkindha Riksharajas did not have any children and when he prayed to Indra he gave these two boys to that king. So Vali and Sugreeva are brothers and they were raised in Kishkindha. Vali got the kingdom after the death of king Riksharajas. Vali was very strong and a mighty warrior. He had once carried Ravana in his armpit and kept him as a toy for his son Angada. Later they pledged friendship. So Vali could have simply ordered Ravana to return Sita to Rama if only Rama had asked him to do so. But destiny was otherwise.

In the next chapter, We'll see the Crowning of Sugreeva.
