When the Vanaras were recounting their fate and how they had to choose this unhappy end they all heard a very loud noise and they saw a very huge eagle coming there. It said that he would be happy to have them all for dinner as he had been awaiting food for a long time. Then Angada told Hanuman that those who came in search of Sita were destined to die like that. He also said that Jatayu met with a better death when he fought with Ravana to save Sita. When the bird heard this he told the Vanaras that he was Sampati and the elder brother of Jatayu and he wanted to know what happened to his brother. He also said that his wings were burnt by the Sun when he and Jatayu were racing to reach him and he became immobile.

However, the Vanaras were
suspicious of Sampati and feared that he was going to eat all of them. They
said that any way they intended to lose their lives so this after all could be a
solution. Then Angada addressed Sampati and told him their story. He said that
there was a famous Vanara called Rikshrajas whose sons were Vali and Sugreeva
and that he was Vali’s son. Then he told the story how they happened to come
there. He said that Rama had done the last rites to Jatayu. He continued to say
that as they all failed to find Sita who had been stolen by Ravana they decided
to fast unto death. He then asked Sampati to help them if he knew the
whereabouts of Sita.
Sampati said that he was
unable to go and fight but he would tell them where Sita was kept. He said Sita
was seen being carried away by Ravana who was the son of Vishrawas and who
ruled in the city of Lanka which was surrounded by the sea and at a distance of
hundred Yojanas (about 1300 km) from there. He said that eagles could see
things at long distance and this was needed for them to hunt for food. He said
that he could even see Sita in Lanka. Then he said that he wanted to do the
last rites to his brother and requested the Vanaras to carry him to the sea.
The Vanaras did so and Sampati performed the last rites to his brother Jatayu.

Jambavan wanted to know how Sampati knew about Sita and where and when he saw her being abducted by Ravana. So he questioned again Sampati. Sampati then replied that he was invalid he was unable to hunt for his food. Therefore his son
Suparshwa brought him food every day. One day he was late and Sampati was furious as he was starving. So he questioned his son why he was so late. His son explained that while he was flying high in the skies looking for prey he saw a beautiful lady being carried by a man who was enormous in size. And when he approached them to eat them, the man requested him humbly to let them go. Therefore he had to oblige and let them go. Upon this, the Siddhas praised Suparshwa and said that they were happy because Sita Devi was alive. Suparshwa also learned that Ravana was abducting Rama’s wife Sita. He heard Sita crying “Rama, Lakshmana”. Suparshwa explained to Sampati that he was delayed because of all this.

Sampati said that upon
hearing that atrocious news he was furious but due to his advanced age could not
do anything. He was helpless as he was too old and could not fly. He told the
Vanaras that even though Ravana was a powerful king he could not face Rama’s sharp
arrows and they would surely succeed in their task of finding Sita and bringing
her back. He asked them to think well and plan a good strategy without any
further delay.
