Angada then addressed all the Vanaras. He said that nature had started flowering and it was the Tamil month of Aippasi (Ashwayuja in Sanskrit) which is an interesting detail. Normally this is not the best month, as we know now for flowers to bloom because this corresponds to the month of November. It is possible that certain trees flowered in November or that the seasons in those times were different and it could as well be due to the precession of the equinox. We know that the precession of the Earth’s axis leads to a shift in the seasons.
I wish to digress a little bit on this. The axis of rotation
of our Earth is not fixed but it executes small rotational movements similar to
a spinning top. It completes one rotation in about 26000 years. In other words, it moves by 1° every 71 years which is extremely small to be noted easily by
people. It would take a few centuries to observe some perceptible change. The
result of this is that the so-called North Star is not something permanent. In
the course of millennia, it changes from one to another. Also, the star in
question may not be exactly aligned with the axis of rotation but displaced by
one or two degrees a deviation that could hardly be appreciated by men.
Actually, the Polaris, which is the North Pole star for us now is also away by a
degree or so.
In the times of Ramayana, say, around 4000 BCE or so, the pole star was Draconis or Tuban. So what they saw as pole stars is not the same as the one we see today. So what about the story of Dhruva? Dhruva in Sanskrit means fixed or devoid of motion. So whichever star was seen fixed and not moving as against the background of so many stars which all appear to move (due to earth’s rotation) was designated as Dhruva. It is of interest to add that the present star Ursa Minoris has been the Pole star since 1060 ACE. It will also drift slowly and in about 12000 years the pole will be near the star Alpha Lyrae or Vega. Our successors would be calling it Dhruva if they still remember our Puranas!

Angada continued that since they had not found out the whereabouts of Sita, King Sugreeva would surely put them to death. He said it would be better if all of them fasted unto death there itself. He said he also had a feeling that he was not a favorite of Sugreeva and he was made the crown prince only under pressure from Rama. So Angada decided that he would rather fast on the seashore and die rather than return home. All the Vanaras panicked hearing these words of Angada and also agreed with him in his decision to die there. Then Taran suggested that they all could vanish into the huge cave which abounded in food and even Rama could not find them. This pleased all the Vanaras.

Hanuman was worried that they all might be ordered to do so
by Sugreeva. Hanuman then pondered knowing Angada well. In this context, Valmiki
says that Hanuman knew Angada to be endowed with knowledge with eight
characteristics, four types of strengths, and fourteen qualities (Gunas).
It is interesting to give here the commentary of the
translator of the book on the above qualities. The eight characteristics are
1) Quick grasp of things, 2) good retention, 3) remembering
them at the right time, 4) clearly explaining them to others,5) speaking cleverly,
6) condemning wrong ideas of others, 7) knowing the real meaning of what others
say and 8) understanding things correctly. As regards the four types of strength are, physical power will power, suggesting solutions to problems, and power of
relations. The fourteen Gunas are 1) knowing the place and time,
2)Strong mind, 3) great endurance, 4) knowledge of many
things,
5) Capable of knowing and acting the right way, 6)
perseverance,
7) Keeping things confidential, 8) keeping up the word, 9)
comfort,
10) knowing one’s limit, 11) gratefulness, 12) never letting
down those who depend on him, 13) patience, and 14) keeping calm. (Sarga 50,

Hanuman tried to convince Angada and change his idea of abandoning
the search for Sita. He praised Sugreeva’s valor and said that he not having
any children would surely install Angada on the throne and also never try to
displease his mother Tara. Hanuman said that Angada also was very
capable of ruling the kingdom. Hiding in the cave was not a solution because it
would be split open by Lakshmana’s sharp arrows. The Vanaras would start
feeling homesick and would desert Angada in due course of time. Hanuman assured
Angada that Sugreeva was a king of justice and would never think of harming
him. Hanuman advised Angada to therefore get up and act.
Angada however was far from being convinced by Hanuman’s words. He continued to criticize Sugreeva. He asked how one could trust Sugreeva who had done so many things not in conformity with dharma. First, he closed the cave with Vali in it (we know that this was a misunderstanding on the part of Sugreeva), took his wife Tara, and usurped his kingdom. He also forgot his promise to Rama and indulged in his pleasures not knowing the passage of time. Even now he had sent all the Vanaras to search because of his fear of Lakshmana’s anger. Therefore he said with conviction that he had no intention of returning home at all but would die there fasting. He requested Hanuman to convey his respects to Rama and Lakshmana and also sent similar messages to Sugreeva and his mother Tara and his aunt Ruma. Then he spread a bed of darbha grass and after offering prayers lay down on the darbha bed. His eyes were filled with tears. It was a moving scene and all the Vanaras started doing likewise.
