After Bharata left Rama in his Chitrakoota ashram realized that the rishis in the ashrams were wearing a worried look. So he asked them the reason and wanted to know if Sita had offended them in any way. Rishi Kulapati who had become very old and weak due to long years of austerity and penance told Rama that Sita was without any blemish. He said “Dear child but we are all facing very great danger from the rakshasas living in this region. One of Ravana’s brothers called Khara lives in the region called “Janasthana” who is a cruel cannibal. He is killing the rishis. He is capable of changing his form and comes and destroys all our Yajnyas (rituals). All the rishis who are here want to go away to some other place. Khara will also cause you and your wife trouble so it is not safe for you too to live here”.

Rama pondered over what the
Rishi had told him and was inclined to leave that place. Also since Bharata,
his mothers, and all the people had visited that place their memory perturbed
Rama who had a tendency to think of them all. The surroundings had also become
somewhat dirty because of the visit of the army of elephants and horses. So
Rama decided to leave Chitrakoota ashram and went to the ashram of the great
rishi Atri.
Rishi Atri welcomed Rama
along with Sita and Lakshmana as his own children and gave them hospitality.
Then he called his wife Anasuya (literally means the one without envy) to take
care of Sita. Atri then introduced her to them. He said, “My wife Anasuya is
very old and frail. She had performed great penance for 10000 years”. They all
paid their respect to her.

Well, Ramayana is believed to
have taken place about 7000 years. It is hard for us to comprehend how
Atri and his wife had already spent 10000 years in penance, for this would take
us further back to 20000 years or so. I feel that the number may be intended to
indicate very many years of intense penance. Such problems of time scale occur
often in our Itihasas and Puranas. Such numbers are employed to describe even
the strength of the army and so on. In many instances, such large numbers used
to indicate a period of time leads us to some difficulty in determining the
chronology. It is not possible to go deeper into such details.
Then Anasuya took Sita with
her as a mother would a daughter. She told that Sita in following her husband
to the forest despite undergoing many difficulties was praiseworthy and was
God’s will. She then told her about the Dharma of a dutiful wife and how she should
be by the side of her husband in all circumstances. She also said women such as
Sita were assured of the heavens. Sita cleverly replied saying that even though
whatever Anasuya told her had been already taught to her by her parents. It was
good to hear them again from venerable Anasuya. She assured her that she would
follow her husband faithfully and serve him. Besides, she said that her husband
was a very noble person with only good qualities. He was executing his father’s
wish without fail. So she said that she was very fortunate to be Rama’s wife.

Anasuya was very pleased with Sita’s reply and asked her what she would like to have from her. Sita replied politely that she was in need of nothing. Anasuya was all the more pleased to hear that and blessed her. She also gave Sita several jewels, dresses, perfumes, and some sandal paste. She asked Sita to wear those jewels and dresses because she said that she very much wanted to see Sita with Rama as Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. Sita did as she wanted and they started to chat. Anasuya asked Sita to explain to her in detail her wedding with Rama. Sita told her how Janaka the king of Mithila found her as a baby on the ground covered with all dust and how he had adopted her as his daughter. Sita then described how she was raised by the queen. She then described how Rama came along with Vishwamitra and how he broke the great bow which Janaka had received from Varuna once upon a time and which could not be even lifted by several kings. Sita continued that Janaka was so pleased with this and he offered Rama his hands of Sita. But Rama awaited the arrival of his father king Dasharatha, said Sita, and with his permission married her. Anasuya was very happy to hear that great story and hugged Sita and blessed her and bade her go and rest for the night. Rama was very happy to see resplendent Sita dressed in silk and wearing beautiful jewels. They spent the night in the ashram.
The next day morning Rama asked
Rishi Atri for his permission to leave the ashram. Then the rishis there told Rama
about the harassment they suffered at the hands of rakshasas who were living
in that region. They indicated a path that was safe to follow and asked Rama
to be very careful and showered blessings for their safety. Rama, Sita, and
Lakshmana entered the thick forest as the sun enters thick clouds.
