Rama goes to Dandakaranya - Chapter 01

ARANYA KANDA

Rama, Sita and Lakshmana then entered the forest of Dandaka called Dandakaranya. They saw many rows of ashrams of rishis amongst huge trees, fruit trees, and those covered with flowers. There were mountain brooks with water birds, lotus, and other flowers. The musical sound of chanting of the Vedas could be heard everywhere. As they walked through the ashrams the rishis came out and were surprised to see the three of them with such brilliance and in hermit dress. The rishis welcomed them and asked them to come in. After exchanging the usual formalities they all addressed Rama and told him about the difficulties and hardships that they suffered at the hands of rakshasas and prayed to Rama as their king for their protection. Then they all left and entered the forest.

Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana came to a place and were shocked to see some destruction caused to the surroundings. They were also shocked to see a huge Rakshasa who appeared before them and challenged them and took away Sita and angrily told them that as hermits they had no right to be with a woman and she would become his wife. Rama was very upset to have lost his dear wife Sita and said to Lakshmana that nothing in the world was as dear to him as Sita. Lakshmana consoled his brother and angrily challenged the Rakshasa to fight. The rakshasa said that he was Viradha and he was going to eat them both alive. Rama sent his fast and piercing arrows at him but to no avail. Viradha threw his trident with full force on Rama which he interrupted and broke with his powerful arrows. Then Viradha left Sita down but picked up both Rama and Lakshmana and kept them on his shoulders and started running. Rama then cut off both his hands and he fell down. Then he realized who Rama was and told them his story. He was a Gandharva and had incurred a curse from Kubera, Lord Brahma’s son. Nothing could kill him but he had to be buried for him to die. He prayed to Rama to forgive him and asked him to dig a pit and bury him in it. He also told Rama to proceed to the Ashram of rishi Sharabhanga and meet him. The brothers dug a very huge pit and buried Viradha in it. Then they along with Sita proceeded towards Sharabhanga rishi’s ashram.

As they approached the ashram Rama stopped and said that he could see the chariot of Indra the lord of Devas and also other Siddhas whose feet were not touching the ground (floating as it were). Rama asked Lakshmana and Sita to wait until he went and saw what was going on. Actually, Indra had come down to take Sharabhanga rishi to the heavens because the rishi had attained this elevated state by his penances. But when Indra saw Rama approaching, he asked his people to leave because he said that Rama had a great mission to accomplish and he would talk to Rama only after that. So saying they all ascended in the skies and disappeared.

Some remarks are in order here. One realizes that Indra and other Siddhas were visible only to Rama. India has been the land of Siddhas. We know of several Siddhas. Sadashiva Bhrahmedra is a well-known Siddha who lived in the 18th century in Karur in Tamil Nadu. He has composed several compositions and even set them to Carnatic music ragas. In the last century, a great saint called Ramana Maharishi lived in Tiruvannamalai and attained Samadhi in April 1950. On the night of his death, people could see a streak of light rising in the sky which moved towards the Arunachala hills and disappeared. Just to convince let me also add that the famous French photographer Cartier happened to be present and was a witness to this sight. He gave a statement to the press too. We tend to believe more easily, a foreigner than fellow Indians so I added the above information. Many of us have heard about Maharishi. It seems that when his disciples got scared of the wild animals, which used to come into the ashram he used to tell them “look at that leopard. Do not disturb him. He is a Siddha Purusha who has come to see us”. Also as one does Giri Valam (going around the hill) one can see there so many caves and people have reported to have heard from some of them the chanting of Vedas and Mantras and it is said that Maharishi had asked the people not to go inside and disturb the Siddhas. The Siddhas are supposed to live for a very long time that is much beyond the span of human life.

Rama followed by Sita and Lakshmana then entered the ashram and offered his respects to rishi Sharabhanga who was seated there radiating his glow. The Rishi offered them hospitality and told Rama that Lord Indra had come to take him to the (Brahmaloka) Heavens but he wanted to wait because he did not want to miss the “darshan” of Rama. Sharabhanga was gracious to give away all the benefits he had acquired by his penance to Rama. Rama thanked him and requested him to indicate a suitable place for them to live. Sharabhanga asked Rama to go in the direction opposite to the flow of the river Mandakini and reach the place where the Rishi Suteekshna was doing penance. He said that he would indicate the right place for them. Having said this Sharabhanga prayed to Rama for his blessings and entered the fire. His mortal body was turned into ashes but he rose from the fire, as Rama and others were watching, as a young person radiating brilliance all over and rose to the Brahmaloka.

After this moving incident, all the rishis living there went to see Rama. Valmiki gives a very interesting description of these numerous types of rishis. There were, Vaikhanasas born from the fingers of God, Valakhilyas born out of the hair of God, Samprakshalas, Asmakuttas, those who lived only on leaves, others called Dandolukas living on just grains, those who stood on neck deep water and did penance, those who lived on just water and so on. All of them had been doing penance and performing austerities for a long time. They all praised Rama and told him that he was the protector of the world. They said that the rishis were being troubled by rakshasas who destroyed their Yajnya and prevented them from observing their rituals. They said thus the rishis living on the banks of the river Pampa, in the Chitrakoota Mountains, and on the banks of Mandakini were all put in great danger and difficulties. They said they all had come to surrender unto Rama for his protection. Rama promised them help and took a vow that he with Lakshmana would destroy all the rakshasas. Then, Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana started to go and meet Suteekshna.
