In the previous chapter, we saw Bharata - Bharadwaja discussions. , Now we'll see Rama in Chitrakoota.
Rama and all had already spent a few days in Chitrakoota Mountain in the ashram by the side of the river Mandakini. The ashram was constructed according to Vastu Shastra.
Rama who was in a relaxed
mental frame described the beauty of the place to Sita. He pointed out to Sita
in the mountain the presence of minerals of varied colors, reddish (probably
iron-based), greyish and silvery deposits. He even mentioned compounds
with mercury (Jyotirasa is the Sanskrit word used by Valmiki).

This shows that even in
those times, there was so much knowledge about minerals and some
chemistry too. We have also in Mahabharata a reference to gold particles called
Piplika which were mined by ants from the sands in certain areas. Mention is
made that kings offered Piplika (gold) to Yudhishtira).
He showed Sita many
varieties of birds and animals such as, various types of deer, tigers, bears, and giraffes which were not all wild. There were also several fruit trees such
as mangoes, jackfruits, Jamun, etc., and also huge trees that added to the
beauty of the place. The breeze was laden with perfumes of the flowers and
there were several mountain streams with clear water flowing in them. Rama
mentioned thousands of medicinal herbs that grew there and some that even
glowed in the dark of the night. It is interesting that some of them were
fluorescent. To sum up Rama said that they could spend their forest life
peacefully there and in meditation. He pointed out the river Mandakini which
was flowing around the hill in which the great rishis took their daily bath. He
said that they could take their bath thrice a day admiring the lotus flowers.
Rama asked Sita to consider the animals around as the people of Ayodhya and the
hill as Ayodhya itself and Mandakini as Sarayu and be happy. Rama preferred
this life to the one as king of Ayodhya.

One day while Rama and Sita
were sitting and enjoying the nature they heard a loud noise and also saw
elephants running in panic. Rama asked Lakshmana to find out what was going on
and he accordingly climbed a tall tree to observe the horizon all around. He
saw a huge army of people advancing towards their ashram and getting alarmed he
told Rama to take Sita to a hiding place and prepare their arms ready to
attack. Rama still calm and asked him to see whose army it was. Lakshmana
angrily replied that it was none else than Bharata who was leading it and said
he was convinced that he was coming to fight with them and kill them so that he
could keep the kingdom to himself forever. Lakshmana wanted to kill Bharata and
destroy the whole army. He argued that it would not all be a sinful act so he
asked his brother’s permission to do so.
Rama appeased him and said
that he did not believe that Bharata could have such intentions. Even if it
were to be so Rama said that he could not care less for the kingdom. He said
his love for his brothers was supreme and nothing was more important to him so
he would gladly offer the kingdom to Bharata if he so wanted. Rama added that
he knew Bharata only too well and he was sure that he must have been too much
grieved and troubled by Rama’s departure to the forest and therefore had
probably come there to see them. He advised Lakshmana that for the sake of a
kingdom neither one’s father nor brothers should be killed and so he should
calm down. Rama further said that he felt that Bharata perhaps came there to
ask them to return to Ayodhya.

Bharata asked all his men to
stay back and started with Guha and others to search for Rama’s ashram. Finally, they found an ashram in a distance from where smoke was coming and Bharata knew
that he found the place. So he asked guru Vashishtha to go and fetch the queens
and proceed, accompanied by Shatrughna and Sumantra. As they approached they
saw logs of wood piled in front of the ashram and also dried cakes of the dung of
buffaloes (Valmiki specially mentions buffaloes and not cows) and of deer kept
in heaps which were to be used as fuel for warming during winter. Bharata as he
approached the ashram felt miserable and said that Rama had to suffer in the
forest because of him and hence his life had been a waste.
Bharata looked at the ashram
and then could see Rama sitting inside on the floor on a mat of darbha grass in a hermit’s dress with collected hair. Both Sita and Lakshmana were seated by the
side of Rama. Bharata’s heart broke to see that sight. He could not control
himself anymore and he and Shatrughna rushed inside and fell at the feet of
Rama crying aloud “Oh brother”. Rama lifted them up and embraced them and he
also shed tears. Then Sumantra and Guha also entered the ashram. Valmiki
compares it to both Venus and Jupiter coming to the Sun and the Moon.

This description should be an allusion to astrological predictions. Valmiki uses such comparisons with astrology and astronomy on several occasions as we will be seeing.
