Rama then asked Bharata the reason for his coming to the for- est as a hermit. Bharata respectfully replied “Our father has done something which is not befitting a king, in sending you to the forest. Then due to the agony of his separation from his son, he attained Moksha. He listened to Kaikeyi and committed a great sin. You should now have pity on me and bless me by returning to Ayodhya. You need to be there for the sake of your old mother who has lost her husband. Also according to our tradition, you should become the king of Ayodhya”. Rama spoke calmly “Dear Bharata how you who are well versed in all Shastras could ask me to come and accept the crown. Our father has ordered me to go to the forest and he has every right to do so and as a son, I must execute his orders. You should be the king and I should live in Dandakaranya. That was the wish of our father who has now attained Moksha. I value most honoring our father’s words”. Bharata tried to convince Rama by using various arguments. Rama gave him a lot of advice.

It is very moving to read the discussion between Rama and
Bharata and let me give below some portions to illustrate.
Rama said “Bharata all that one saves is finally destroyed.
Union is sure to end in separation. Life ends with death. A night spent is lost
forever. Your lifetime is only decreasing every day. The Lord of death Yama
always walks with you. Men enjoy the Sunrise and the sunset but they do not
realize that their life is also being spent. The seasons are enjoyable but
each season means that one’s lifetime is also decreasing. Our father in his
long life had performed several Yajnyas and given charities by virtue of which
he is now enjoying paradise. We should not cause any displeasure to him now
and we have to execute his wish by all means and you should cooperate in this”.

Bharata made a final request to Rama to come and accept the
kingdom and thereby save his mother from great sin. He pointed out that Rama
had to first live the life of a family man (Grihastha) before going to the
forest (Vanaprasta) which is supposed to be the last stage of one’s life.
Bharata said that if Rama did not go back to Ayodhya then he too would stay
with him in the forest. All the others present there also requested Rama to
bless them by returning to Ayodhya.
Rama was not to be convinced by all this. Rama explained to
Bharata about the events that led their father to grant two boons to Kaikeyi in
appreciation of her services by which his life had been saved. So he said that
the boons granted by their father to Kaikeyi had to be honored and it is
imperative that Bharata returns and crown himself and Rama
would spend fourteen years in the forest. So Rama asked Bharata to return to
Ayodhya with Shatrughna and be a good king of the people of Ayodhya.

When Bharata failed to convince Rama to return to Ayodhya, Sage Jabali a very learned person advanced some arguments based on Nastikam (questioning God and rules prescribed by The Vedas). He asked Rama who was the father and who was the son? Besides, his father had departed for the heavens. Of what use was holding a promise given to that person who is no more? Besides, he added that Rama should not break the tradition of the family where the eldest son had the right to the throne. Rama therefore should return to Ayodhya and crown himself instead of remaining like a hermit in the forest. Jabali went a bit too far. He said that there was no meaning in performing ceremonies for the dead parents because how could their offerings ever be able to reach the dead persons.
It is indeed surprising or even shocking that such an
argument was advanced in those days and it figures in Epic Ramayana. This would
illustrate how in our religion (way of life) there is no dogma and one could
ask such questions and eventually get clarifications.

This irritated Rama very much. Rama said that his advice was not acceptable to him. He explained the importance of the truth and how one should at any cost abide by the word given in promise. He then described the values of keeping the promise to one’s father. Rama even went on to say that he wondered how such a person as Jabali could ever have been tolerated in the court of king Dasharatha. Jabali then replied to Rama that he was not at all a Nastika but he adopted such tactics with the only intention to influence Rama to return to Ayodhya and rule the country as was requested by Bharata and all the people.
