Parashurama's challenge and his defeat at the hands of Rama - Chapter 25

In the previous chapter, we saw the Wedding of Sita and her sisters, Now we will see Parashurama's challenge and what Rama did.

 King Dasharatha accompanied by his wives, his sons, and daughters-in-law, and also a huge army happily started his journey back to Ayodhya. On the way, they saw several bad omens and Dasharatha was concerned and asked Vashishtha what they all meant. Vashishtha assured him by saying that all the omens only showed that there was great danger but it was all over. As they were talking the earth trembled, a cyclone started and the sun was hidden to make the place dark. Then there appeared Parashurama with a ferocious face that instilled fear in all. He was carrying his characteristic weapon the axe and also a big bow. Parashurama had vowed to extinguish the Kshatriya (royal) race and had been carrying out his vow. The reason for this was that his father Jamadagni rishi was killed by the king Arjuna (Kartaveeryarjuna) in the past. All feared that Parashurama had come there to give trouble. All the rishis present paid their respects to that great and powerful rishi Parashurama.

Parashurama addressed Rama. He said that he had heard about Rama breaking the Shiva bow, and he had come there to test Rama with the Vishnu bow that was given to him by his father Jamadagni. He challenged Rama to try his Vishnu bow and prove his valor or make a total surrender to him. Upon hearing this Dasharatha in all his humility replied that he knew Parashurama's hatred for the kings and about his great valor and exploits. He requested him to spare Rama. But Parashurama was adamant and repeated that Rama broke the Shiva bow which was not a wonder because it was not strong enough. He said that there was once a fight between Shiva and Vishnu and Vishnu could break Shiva's bow just by emitting a powerful sound (Hoom Karam) which had stunned Shiva. Finally, the Devas appeased Vishnu. The Vishnu bow was then given to the rishi Richeeka who gave it to his son Jamadagni Parashurama's father. Therefore he wanted Rama to try and string his Vishnu bow and said that after that he would challenge Rama to fight with him.

Rama hearing this and with permission from his father told Parashurama that he was well aware of his exploits but there was no need for him to insult him. Rama told him that he could see for himself what he was capable of. So saying he took the Vishnu bow from Parashurama with great ease, fixed the arrow on it, and drew it. Then addressing Parashurama Rama said that since Parashurama was a Brahmin and was as respectable to him as was Vishwamitra he did not want to send the arrow and kill him but then the arrow could not go waste. Therefore he asked Parashurama to offer some targets. There came Lord Brahma, Devas, Siddhas, Gandharvas, and other celestial beings all eager to witness what was happening. Parashurama lost his glow and was stunned. He started talking very slowly. Parashurama then in all humility requested Rama to spare him and said that he would offer to his arrow all the power he had gained by his hard and long penance. He also said that he would retire immediately to Mahendra Mountains to do penance there because he had already donated all of his countries to the Rishi Kashyapa and therefore he could stay only in the Mahendra Mountains. He also said that he had recognized that Rama was none else than Lord Vishnu and therefore his defeat at His hands was not a shame for him. Valmiki adds that all the Devas, Kinnaras, and Gandharvas all assembled in the skies and sang the praise of Rama. Rama agreed and sent his arrow and consumed all the power of Parashurama who then left after paying his respects to Rama.
