The Vanaras were very happy with the information the Eagle king had given and all reached the sea. Valmiki just says that the powerful Vanaras assembled on the Northern Shore of the Southern Ocean.
Here again, we are puzzled.
All along we were given to understand that the Vanara army was in the region of the Vindhya Mountains. Now suddenly we read that they were all assembled on the
northern side of the southern ocean (Indian Ocean). Valmiki clearly
says‘Dakshinasya Samudrasya uttaraam disham’. Now we are at a loss to
understand things. If the Vanara army had come all the way to the south several
hundreds of kilometers then Valmiki does not make any mention of it. All the
arguments developed earlier by me show that the Vanara army was on the
Vindhya Mountains and therefore Hanuman might have flown all the way to Sri Lanka and thus are no longer valid. We have to presume that they all reached the southern
end of India and came to the Indian Ocean even though Valmiki does not
specifically say anything about this detail. One should remember that Valmiki was
not writing an account of each and every detail but the great journey of Rama
in his life on earth. In this respect, we should treat the work of Valmiki
not as a report giving each and every detail.

There is another
interpretation given by some which is based the existence of ‘Kumari Kandam’.
Some researchers have proposed that the Vanaras came out of the cave probably
on the west side of the Vindhya Mountains. It is also proposed that Lanka of
Ravana was down south on the Kumari Kanda which was attached to the southern
tip of India. It is argued that Simhala and Lanka were different so Lanka
cannot be associated with the island Ceylon. It is also believed that the great
Pandya Kingdom including the city of Madurai was in that continent where the
famous Tamil Sangams thrived. This continent is believed to have since been submerged in the sea. They also believe that the real bridge built by Rama is
not visible as it is buried under the sea and the one we now call Ram Setu near
Rameshwaram is not the real one. It is proposed that as the Kumari Kandam
started slowly submerging in the sea the Pandya kingdom shifted to Southern
India and the bridge we call Rama Setu was built by a Pandyan king. Another
argument in its favor is the distance of 100 Yojanas of Lanka from the Vindhya
Mountains as mentioned by Sampati. However, there are several details that would
not match with those found in Valmiki Ramayana the major one being the bridge
from Rameshwaram the trace of which is found even now. So this proposition
appears to be not very popular.
It is quite possible that
Kumari Kandam might have existed which is said to have extended up to the
Equator. This is a subject of intense discussions. Only underwater archaeology
could bring some solid proof and perhaps reveal more about ancient Tamil culture.

The Vanaras when they saw
the endless ocean were very much discouraged. Valmiki describes beautifully the
sea. He says, “The Sea was frightful with various creatures of great size
swimming in it. There were big waves, which in some places appeared as if
sleeping, in some other places as if playing and still elsewhere like mountain
stirring the waters”.
The Vanaras started running
away in fear. Angada addressed them and instilled courage in them. He asked
them whether there was anyone who could jump across hundred Yojanas and come to
the rescue of all of them so that they could all go back to their homes. But
none came up. Some of them came up to offer to jump across ten, twenty, and
thirty Yojanas. The maximum that seemed possible was eighty Yojanas. Finally, there was none who said that he was capable to cross the ocean.

Then Jambavan the senior most of all said that he was once very strong and powerful. He said that he was fortunate to have seen Lord Vishnu taking the Viswaroopa and touching the heavens when he went round the world several times singing His praise. (There is a mention of this in The Bhagavata Purana also). But he said he had become old and could not do that feat of crossing the sea. Then Angada praised Jambavan and said that he could cross a hundred Yojanas and reach Lanka but was not sure of having enough strength to return. Upon this Jambavan wisely said that Angada surely had the strength to cross a thousand Yojanas but there was no question of his going because he was the leader of the army and was like the main root of the tree and hence important for the survival of the tree. It was their duty to protect him and keep him with them.
