Khara underestimated the prowess of Rama and Lakshmana and ordered fourteen very strong rakshasas to go and kill the brothers. Shoorpanakha guided them. Rama saw them approaching and asked Lakshmana to take care of Sita and went to meet the rakshasas. He tried to dissuade them and asked them to go back. But since they challenged Rama he sent astras and killed all of them in an instant. Shoorpanakha saw that all the rakshasas were dead and she wailed aloud. She ran back to Khara to inform him what had happened. She said that he must come to her rescue as she was very much distressed by all that had happened. She told Khara that he was incapable of fighting with Rama and he brought shame to the rakshasas. She challenged him to go and fight and kill Rama at once if he was courageous enough. Khara became very angry and told his sister that he would go and kill both the brothers in the fight. He said that Shoorpanakha would soon be drinking the hot blood of Rama. Khara asked Dooshana the chief of his army to prepare his golden chariot for him to go and fight Rama.

Khara mounted his chariot and left along with Dooshana. They were accompanied by an army of rakshasas. Valmiki says that four- teen thousand rakshasas armed to their teeth went with Khara. They all rushed to the place where Rama was.
Ill omens greeted them everywhere. Valmiki gives a detailed description of these ill omens. We get an idea of the omens, which were considered ill at that epoch. Even now some are considered so. To start with the horses slipped and fell down. The sun in the sky had a big red circle. A big vulture flew and circled the chariot of Khara. Wild animals raised unpleasant voices. The wolves howled in the eastern direction. There was the darkness that engulfed the whole place. The sky resounded with thunder. But Khara was unperturbed by all these ill omens. He said that only cowards took notice of the omens and he was capable of bringing down even the stars with his sharp arrows. Soon he said he would be drinking Rama’s blood. He was surrounded by twelve great warriors.

Another important omen is connected with celestial events. Valmiki here shows his knowledge of Astronomy. He describes that a very dark cloud was seen near the Sun. The wicked ‘shadow’ planet Rahu caught the Sun, which indicated the solar eclipse. Valmiki further adds that although it was not a New moon day (Amavasya) Rahu caught the Sun. It is to be noted here that despite the mythological belief that it was Rahu, which swallowed the Sun during a solar eclipse in those ancient times (now we know that it is the moon that hides the Sun) they seemed to know the scientific fact that the solar eclipse can occur only on a New moon day. In this shloka, Valmiki has put us in a dilemma. Should we take that it was indeed a solar eclipse on that day and Valmiki wrongly calculated that it was not Amavasya or it appeared like a solar eclipse but it was not? This is important because some people have used this incidence of the solar eclipse to estimate the date of this event. I feel that it could be a poetic description that it was an eclipse but in reality, it was not because they knew very well to calculate when the New moon occurred. So I think that predicting the date of this event is questionable.
Rama also saw these bad omens and asked Lakshmana to take Sita to a safe hiding place and assured him of his victory over the rakshasas. Lakshmana said that he very much wanted to be by the side of his brother and fight but then he obeyed his orders and took Sita to safety and remained with her. Rama was in great fury to kill Khara and the world trembled to look at him at that time.
Valmiki gives a detailed description of the war of Rama and Khara. He says that Khara was shining like the planet Mars among the stars. In western culture, Mars is a war god but it is not so in our culture. However, it is interesting that Valmiki uses this simile.
It is true that the planet Mars shines quite bright as compared to
many stars. There is also a description of a variety of arms (astras) used by
Rama and Khara. Khara uses a maze studded with iron nails (Aayasaihi Sangkubhihi-
Aaranya Kanda, Sargam 26).
This shows that the metallurgy of iron was known even in that period
contrary to the belief prevalent in the West.

Rama used many powerful Astras and showered thousands of arrows on the
rakshasas. Some examples of the astras are ‘Nallekam, Naracham, and Vikarni.
The rakshasas were killed in thousands by these astras.
Devas and rishis assembled in the skies to witness the Great War between Rama and Khara.
There were thousands of dead bodies, dead elephants, horses, and so on
littered all over in the ground. Then Dooshana came to fight whose chariot was
shattered by Rama’s arrows. He then came to attack Rama with a maze studded
with iron nails. Rama cut his two hands and he fell down dead. All the rishis
praised Rama for the destruction of the evil rakshasa. Then came another
powerful rakshasa Thrisiras (literal meaning one with three heads) to attack
Rama and he too was killed by Rama.
Khara was furious but at the same time, he was so terrified at the
prowess of Rama who was annihilating his army of thousands single-handed. A
very fierce fight ensued and the sky was dark with thousands of arrows. Khara
succeeded in breaking Rama’s arrows and raised a loud noise, which made all
tremble. Rama was wounded all over the body and he resembled a flame. He took
another bow and smashed Khara’s chariot and killed his horses. Khara jumped on
the floor and took his huge maze and came to attack Rama. Rama told him that
his end was nearing and the world was going to be freed from his evils. Khara
was enraged and threw his maze at Rama. It came burning everything on its way.
But Rama blew it into pieces with his arrows. Finally, Rama sent an Astra called
‘Bhramadanda’ emitting flames, which pierced Khara’s chest, and he fell down in
flames.
The end of Khara is compared to that of a rakshasa named Andhaka who was burnt down by enraged Shiva and which happened in Tiruvenkadu (Svetaranya). This place is close to Seerkazhi in Tamil Nadu and we visited an old Shiva temple there. It is of interest that this place figures in Ramayana.
All the sages were happy that the rakshasas were totally destroyed and
they blessed Rama for having brought peace to that place. They could now
perform peacefully their penance and Yagas etc., without any disturbance from
the rakshasas.
Lakshmana and Sita came out of their hiding place of safety and were very happy to see Rama who had destroyed the rakshasas safe and sound. Sita was so proud that she embraced her husband. They all went back happily to their ashram.
