Rama in distress - Chapter 13

In the previous chapter, we saw Ravana gives Sita a deadline. , Now we'll see Rama in distress.

Ramayana Book

Rama after killing Mareecha was returning to his ashram and he saw several evil omens. A fox was howling behind him. Rama feared that Lakshmana perhaps left Sita to come to his help and some rakshasa might have eaten Sita. His fears only increased when he saw Lakshmana coming at a distance because that meant that Sita was all alone. He asked Lakshmana in a gentle voice why he abandoned Sita alone. Lakshmana explained what had happened. Rama lamented whether they would ever see Sita alive. Rama went on praising Sita for her great qualities and for having followed her husband to the forest despite the dangers and difficulties.

Rama was completely broken and asked Lakshmana how and where they could find her. He said that he would kill himself if Sita were not to be in the ashram. He told Lakshmana that he should have resisted Sita’s command and stayed with her. They both reached their ashram in Janasthana and sank in sorrow when they found it empty.

Rama again found fault with Lakshmana for his hasty action of abandoning Sita. Lakshmana said that he had tried very much to argue with Sita she started accusing him of bad intention. Sita even accused Lakshmana for having plotted with Bharata. So he had but to leave her and go in search of his brother.

Rama continued to search for Sita. He asked each and every tree. He asked those trees which were the favourites of Sita. He asked the animals all around. He roamed around like a mad person. He was getting more and more convinced that she was cut into pieces and eaten by the rakshasas. The brothers searched again and again in the mountains, rivers and in the thick forest. They wondered if Sita was not playing a practical joke on them by hiding somewhere. Rama told Lakshmana how he could ever return to Ayodhya without his dear Sita. What answer he could give to king Janaka who would ask about her welfare. Rama said that he would kill himself rather than living without Sita. Lakshmana tried to console his brother and asked him not to lose courage and hope. They thought that Sita had gone to the river Godavari which she loved so much. They renewed their search but all in vain. Rama cried loud in despair “Oh my Sita, Oh my Sita”. Rama told Lakshmana that he should return to Ayodhya and be with Bharata and tell the queens about what had happened in the forest. Rama said that he would remain in the forest because there was nothing more in his life.

Lakshmana tried to console his brother but Rama was inconsolable. Rama told Lakshmana that he must have sinned in his previous life and he was paying for it in his present life.

It is indeed ironical that Rama who was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu should talk about sinning in his previous life. In his whole life Rama never alluded even once to his incarnation but lived just like a man born in the earth. Therefore he invoked the effect of Karma as the cause for his continuous suffering.

Valmiki describes Rama’s distress in several beautiful verses, which are indeed very moving. Valmiki says that the flora and fauna did not say anything to Rama because they were afraid of Ravana as it were. One can well imagine how one would feel if in a dense forest one suddenly does not find one’s dear wife. There is no one to whom one could ask. Hence Rama enquires the trees, flowers, animals, and so on. Rama asked Lakshmana to go and check again on the banks of Godavari and he obeyed. He returned and said there was no trace of Sita anywhere. Rama not believing him went himself and searched.

As they continued their search Rama remarked that the deers repeatedly looked at them. Rama asked them where was Sita. The deers thus questioned by Rama all looked towards south and moved looking at the sky. Lakshmana was sharp enough to notice this and told Rama that they might as well go in the direction of south in search of Sita. As they proceeded they found some scattered flow- ers on the ground and Rama recognised those flowers which he had given to Sita for her to wear. They also saw a broken bow and footsteps of Sita and also those which were huge. They also found some jewels of Sita fallen here and there along with flowers. Rama saw a big broken bow and well decorate shield. Rama thought that two rakshasas might have fought to possess Sita and perhaps she was eaten by them. They further saw a broken chariot and won- dered to whom it belonged. Rama’s anger became uncontrollable and he said that the world had misunderstood his kindness as his cowardice. He would prove that it was not so. So saying he drew his bow and was ready to send an astra which he said would level the mountains and dry up the sea. Lakshmana saw his brother’s determination and prayed to him to calm down. He assured him that with the help of rishis they would certainly find Sita. He said that if a person like Rama could not bear the sadness caused by Karma who else could. He quoted some examples to show the power of fate. He said “Vashishtha lost all his hundred sons in one day but he did not break down. The mother earth bears the entire burden patiently but even she suffers from the earthquakes. Of what use it was to destroy everything? Let us find the culprit and punish him”. Lakshmana suggested that they should search well in Janasthana, which was full of rakshasas, and they started searching again.

They came upon a big eagle fallen on the ground soaked in blood and Rama drew his arrow in anger because he thought it was a rakshasa who having eaten Sita had taken the form of an eagle. But it was none else than Jatayu. When Jatayu saw Rama in anger he appealed to him not to kill him and said that he was his father’s friend Jatayu and he was in that condition because he fought with Ravana who was carrying away Sita. Rama was so saddened and he bent down and hugged the Jatayu and asked him to tell him in detail what had happened. Jatayu told Rama about the fight he had with Ravana who was carrying away Sita. He said that he had broken Ravana’s chariot and killed the charioteer but Ravana cut off his wings and he fell down wounded. He added that Ravana was the son of Vishrawas and the king of Lanka. Ravana took Sita and went by the sky to the south. Rama implored Jatayu to tell more but alas he breathed his last. Rama wept bitterly and did the last rites for Jatayu. He told Lakshmana that even in the animal kingdom there were those which followed Dharma and he was saddened more by Jatayu’s death than the separation of Sita. He asked Lakshmana to bring wood and set up a pyre on the banks of Godavari. Rama cremated Jatayu as if he was his own father. He offered deer’s meat to the departed soul of Jatayu accompanied by the rituals as ordained by the Shastras. Rama wept bitterly. He said it was his misfortune that resulted in the cruel end of Jatayu who had lived in grandeur all along. Rama was convinced that there was no person in the world who was as unfortunate as he.
