KISHKINDHA KANDA - Chapter 01

Rama and Lakshmana admired the beauty of Pampa Lake. Rama was reminded of Sita and he broke down. He said “Dear brother look at the beautiful lake with lotus and lilies and also the lovely forest surrounding it. Though I am in agony thinking of Sita and also   Bharata my heart is joyful looking at this beautiful nature”. Valmiki provides a beautiful description of nature. Rama says that the trees with yellow flowers looked like men dressed in silk wearing gold ornaments.

I remember when I saw for the first time the huge Acacia trees in France bearing bunches of white fragrant flowers and looking so beautiful I was reminded of ripe old

South Indian Sumangali women wearing colorful Kanchipuram sarees with bunches of flowers adorning their heads and I had shared this with Lalita. I am happy that I have a little sense of poetry in me.

However, Rama was all the more sad because any beautiful thing he saw reminded him of his beloved Sita and he felt the pangs of separation. He told Lakshmana that he did not want to live without Sita and the breeze of the spring season was no longer soothing to him but was burning him. This kind of description “the breeze being hot for the lover who is separated from her sweetheart” is often found in Kalidasa’s works. It appears that Valmiki was the precursor to using such similes.

Rama looking at the birds chirping again felt miserable and said that the Rakshasa did not separate them but took away his dear Sita. Rama started fearing that Sita unable to bear the separation would have perhaps put an end to her life. Rama wept bitterly thinking of his dear wife Sita and told Lakshmana how he could go back to Ayodhya without Sita and how could he ever answer Janaka. So he asked Lakshmana to go back to Ayodhya without him and be with the family. Lakshmana consoled Rama saying that he was the best of men and he should suppress his grief and stop weeping because it was not becoming of him. He told him that excessive attachment was harmful. Lakshmana added, “Brother even if Ravana goes to hide in the netherworld (Patala) I would not let him live. The moment we know the whereabouts of Ravana that would be the end of your misery and Sita would be back with you. Think of your great self and great self-control and stop getting frustrated”.

Rama was consoled by these words and he became composed and bold. Then they left Pampa and reached another forest. They resumed the search for Sita in the forest and in the caves. Then the mighty Vanara chief Sugreeva who was roaming in Rishyamooka

Mountain dreading his brother Vali, saw the two brothers coming. He was greatly impressed by their princely look and their majestic walk with the gait of an elephant. He at once thought that Vali had sent them to harm him. Therefore he along with his ministers took refuge in the holy Matanga Ashram. Sugreeva told them that the brothers who had royal looks could be sent by Vali, a name which scared them to death, and the Vanaras at once ran out in all directions and hid in panic. This created a commotion and they uprooted the trees and smashed several boulders. The lions and tigers also got scared. It appears that in those times these wild animals were in great numbers all over India.

Then the wise minister Hanuman reassured all by saying that there was no danger from Vali in that place because he would never approach that Ashram due to a curse. Hanuman also told Sugreeva that it was not befitting a king to behave like that. But Sugreeva asked Hanuman to have a look at the two with their swords, bows, and arrows. Sugreeva said that Vali sure would not approach that place but he could have as well sent some of his friends to kill them. He warned Hanuman to be cautious because kings had connections and Vali was very clever in statecraft. Finally, Sugreeva asked Hanuman himself to go under disguise and talk to both the strangers, gain their goodwill and then find out the purpose of their visit.

Sugreeva chose Hanuman because he was the mightiest at the same very wise and full of resources.
