Bharata expresses his decision to bring back, Rama - Chapter 22

 In the previous chapter, we saw Dasharatha’s funeral. , Now we'll see  Bharata expresses his decision to bring back, Rama.

All the ministers came to see Bharata and requested him to end the mourning and prepare himself for his coronation. They said that a kingdom without the king was like a lady who had lost her husband. The people needed a protector.

Bharata asked the ministers how they, who were so learned could ask him to be the king when Rama was there. He said that it was also the age-old custom of the Ikshvaku dynasty that the eldest son became the king. He said that he wanted to go to the forest and ask Rama to ascend the throne. He said he wanted to take all the necessary things for a crowning ceremony to the forest and crown Rama there. He ordered all the ministers to go with him to the forest to crown Rama. He also wanted the full army to accompany them. All those assembled there praised Bharata for his very noble thoughts and blessed him. Many servants were ordered to prepare the way in the forest for them to go.

Valmiki gives a very detailed description of the workers who were sent ahead for this mission. There were those who knew well about the structure of the ground, those who knew to make accurate measurements using thread as a scale, those who knew digging, those who knew to make tools, and those who were experts in digging wells, carpenters, masons and those who knew to work with bamboos. They cleared the forest and made way for all to proceed. Wherever there was stagnant water or pools they dug canals to empty them. In effect, they were kind of civil engineers. They transformed completely the landscape and created wide avenues all along the way to the banks of Ganga, thus preparing the way for Bharata and his entourage.

In the palace, Bharata was lamenting in grief because his mother Rama was driven to the forest and also Dasharatha died. So he said he could not accept the throne. While he was in this state Vashishtha entered the court. He sent for all the ministers including Sumantra and also asked for Bharata. Several learned men also had assembled in the court. Bharata entered the court and took his seat. Then Vashishtha, the guru addressed all and particularly Bharata, and said “Child your great father has left to you a great kingdom and reached the heavens. Also Rama in order to carry out his father’s wish has gone to the forest. So you accept the throne and let us hurry with your coronation ceremony”. Bharata spoke softly and said “How could a simple mortal like me desire the kingdom which rightfully belonged to one like Rama who has gone through Gurukula and learned and mastered the Vedas? Rama is the legitimate king and if I accept the throne then I would bring great shame to the Ikshvaku dynasty. I will go in search of Rama and request him to return to Ayodhya. If he refuses then I too would remain in the forest with him”. All the people in the court were moved to tears. Bharata requested that they all should go and see Rama in the forest without any delay.
