In the previous chapter, we saw Sita and Lakshmana convince Rama to take them along. , Now we'll see Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana departing to the forest.
After this Rama accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana went to take leave of his father. As they were walking on the street all the people of the city had assembled along the streets which were packed to the full. One had difficulty finding the way through the crowd. Several climbed the buildings for want of space in the street. When they all saw Rama walking without the protection of the usual umbrella and not being followed by the four kinds (chariot, horse, elephant, and soldiers on foot) of the army, they shed tears and told themselves that they too would follow Rama to the forest because they considered him as their savior.
The people started talking
to each other. They wondered how the king could send Rama away to the forest
because he was faultless. Even for a fault, one did not punish so heavily. They
decided that they all should follow Rama and settlein the forest along with
him. They said that let Kaikeyi and her son rule a city that was totally empty
where there would be no chanting of the Vedas, no regular pooja, and no
offerings to God. In Rama’s absence, Ayodhya would turn into a forest and the
forest where he lived would become Ayodhya.
Sumantra accordingly went in and told Dasharatha that his son Rama after having distributed all his possessions to people was there to take his blessings. Dasharatha told Sumantra that he along with all his wives wanted to see his son and ordered Sumantra to get them from the harem. Valmiki says that three hundred and fifty wives all in tears came along with the queen Kausalya. Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana then entered. Dasharatha saw Rama even at a distance and got up to go and meet him. But he was so exhausted that he swooned and fell down on the floor. Rama and Lakshmana ran and lifted him and laid him on a bed. Rama addressed the king and said that he was his visible God and he had come to honor his words and take leave of him. He also said that in spite of his dissuading both Sita and Lakshmana wanted to follow him to the forest. So he asked the king to bless them and let them go. Dasharatha looked at Rama who was so calm and said to him that he had been cheated by Kaikeyi therefore Rama should ignore the order and become the king of Ayodhya himself. Rama replied that the king Dasharatha should live and rule for thousand years and that he should at no cost swerve from the path of truth but let Rama go to the forest.

He said that he would spend fourteen years
happily in the forest and return and pay his respects to his father. Dasharatha
praised Rama’s great qualities and said “Rama your great qualities are really
praiseworthy and it is hard to convince you to renounce. But please stay just
one night and let your mother and me please our eyes on you and you too enjoy
all the pleasures”. Rama replied “dear father after this night who would give
me all these comforts? Please allow us to leave and also you crown my dear
brother Bharata. I swear that I value neither the kingdom nor even Sita but
only making your words come true. I cannot stay here a second longer. You
should no longer be sad. Let things happen as per your promise to Kaikeyi. I
would be very happy to spend my time in the forest enjoying the mountains,
valleys, and the rivers, and so on. We would enjoy also the roots and fruits
available in the forest”. Dasharatha hugged his son and being unable to bear
the separation from Rama he lost completely his senses and fell down. All the
ladies broke down and cried loudly in sorrow. Dasharatha lay motionless on the
floor in a pitiable condition.
