In the previous chapter, we saw Rama accept Kaikeyi’s orders with pleasure. , Now we'll see Rama informs his mother Kausalya the change in plans.
Rama entered the royal apartments of his mother Kausalya and hardly showing his feelings and with a beaming face followed by Lakshmana who on the contrary had great difficulties in hiding his anger. As soon as the people caught sight of Rama, they all blessed him by crying, “be victorious”. Then the Vedic Brahmins assembled there blessed Rama. Kausalya had been spending the whole night offering worship to Lord Vishnu and when Rama entered her apartment, he saw her still in her prayers. He saw his mother was a bit tired because of her fasting and he also saw all the offerings that were kept there for Lord Vishnu. Kausalya took notice of Rama and rushed to him to embrace him. Rama fell at the feet of his mother and took her blessings. She told Rama that soon he would be crowned and hence asked him to follow the Dharma of keeping his word at all costs. Rama thought that it was the best time to announce to her about his leaving for the forest. He told his mother that certain developments had taken place, which he said were not going to be very pleasant for her, Laksmana and Sita. He just said “mother I am on my way to Dandakaranya forest as a hermit to sleep on a bed of ‘Darbha’ grass and would be away for fourteen years. This is the fruit of my actions in my previous birth. (Rama speaks just like an ordinary mortal and hardly suggests anything to indicate that he was but the incarnation of Lord Vishnu). Bharata would be crowned instead. This is the order of my father the king. I will live in the forest and observe the rules of a Vanaprastha (renouncing everything)”. Upon hearing this Kausalya fell down like an uprooted tree because she was unaccustomed to bearing any hardship so far. Rama lifted her affectionately. Kausalya told Rama that if he was never born to her she could have avoided this heartbreaking moment and her only regret would have been that she did not bear any child at all. Besides she was going to be very badly treated by Kaikeyi who never liked her and would have to be even her personal servant. She also said that since the time Rama was born to her twenty four years ago she had not seen unhappiness at all. (Incidentally we learn that Rama was twenty four years old when he had to leave for the forest). She was in tears and finally told Rama that she being unable to bear the separation from her son would die the moment he left and so she too would follow her son to the forest as a cow would her calf.

Lakshmana who was witnessing all these told Kausalya that
Rama had decided to leave the kingdom and go to the forest by the order of a
woman which was not acceptable to him. He said that besides the king was very
old and was not in his good senses being also under the influence of his
beloved. The king he said had gone away from the righteous path. Further
Lakshmana felt that Rama did not deserve such a treatment from his father.
Therefore his orders had no meaning. Lakshmana went farther and said he felt
that the king deserved death at his hands.
Kausalya again appealed to Rama not to go to the forest and
ponder on what Lakshmana had to say. She said that Rama had a duty towards his
mother also and hence should be serving her in her old age as did Kashyapa with
his mother and who consequently attained the Paradise. On the contrary if Rama
decided to go to the forest because his father ordered so, then she would die
being unable to bear the separation from Rama and he would then be responsible
for her death.
