In the previous chapter, we saw Rama trying to appease his mother. , Now we'll see Lakshmana argue with Rama.
Lakshmana was not to be convinced so easily and he was controlling his anger and was breathing hard like a serpent. He told Rama that he could not understand how Rama could so easily be duped by the treacherous plot of Kaikeyi and the old king. He said that the two so-called boons that were promised by Dasharatha a long time ago had probably been already granted and were being used as an excuse. The whole population loved Rama and was expecting him to be their king. So he asked his brother to give him permission to set things right. If this was not rectified the whole world would blame them. He further said that he was unable to accept that it was all happening by God’s will. He wanted Rama to think well. Lakshmana said that someone who faced hard moments accepted them without resistance only if he was a coward and did not have the courage to face them. Brave people would not accept meekly and without resistance. Lakshmana said that he would make Rama’s coronation which had been decided earlier by Dasharatha happen and that too would be God’s will. He pleaded with Rama to give him permission to go ahead and destroy all the enemies and see that Rama was crowned.

But Rama was steadfast in his determination.
He advised Lakshmana on the principles of Dharma and calmed him. He then told
his mother that his decision was made and that her place was beside her husband
and not in the forest. He requested her to bless him and let him go to the
forest. Kausalya had to reconcile and hence she blessed her son. She prayed
that Rama is protected always and said that she would await his return from
the forest. She also wished that the long separation had already ended because
she could not bear the separation. She then prayed and uttered some mantras
called “swastyayana” special to such occasions.
What Kausalya told Rama as a parting message is
indeed very heart rendering. Having realized that Rama could not be dissuaded
from his decision Kausalya reconciled to the situation and said a few parting
words to Rama. Kausalya said “Rama now that you have decided to leave for the
forest do it without any delay. Let the Dharma that you follow so steadfastly
protect you all through. Whatever Astras Brahma Rishi Vishwamitra taught you
may be there to protect you. You who have been serving your parents so
dutifully would be blessed with a long life. Let the trees, elephants, lions, and serpents which are in the forest protect you. Let the Sun, the stars, all the
planets, the seven seas, all the months of the year, the dawn, the dusk, and all
the Devas offer you protection. I pray to Lord Skanda, Shiva, and Narayana to
protect you. Let Indra and Narada protect you”. Then she offered prayers and
blessed Rama with a safe life in the forest and wished for his return to Ayodhya when she
could see him crowned. Rama then proceeded to meet Sita to inform her of the
latest developments.

It is interesting to note the prayers of Kausalya. As a mother, she prayed for the safety of Rama not realizing that he was the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu is omnipresent. He is known to be present in all animate and inanimate things such as the mountains, trees, animals, and so on. Kausalya prays to all these to protect her son who himself is Narayana. Here one sees the love and the affection of a mother. It is also interesting to note Kausalya mentioning the name of Lord Skanda or Lord Subrahmanya, showing that Skanda was prior to Rama Avatara.
