In the previous chapter, we saw Rama's journey to the forest. , Now we'll see Guha - Rama meeting.
That village and the surrounding places were
under the control of a chieftain called Guha who knew about Rama. He came there
to meet them. He hugged Rama with affection and said with great respect that
Rama could consider that place Ayodhya and stay there. He said that he was
awaiting Rama’s orders. He placed varieties of food and said “Respected Sir
please accept our hospitality and consider this place like yours. We have brought
to you the best food, milk, curd, honey, and fried things. We also have
comfortable beds for you to rest. The horses are also being fed”. Rama replied
that he was amply pleased with the hospitality and embraced him with great
affection. Rama said that as they were living like hermits, they would contend
themselves with just some roots and fruits. He wanted Guha to consider them as
hermits and not as princes. Then they went to rest in the night with Lakshmana
mounting the guard.

Guha saw Lakshmana mounting the guard without
sleeping and told him that he, being a prince, it was not his duty to do so and
asked him to rest. Guha said that for him there was no one greater than Rama in
the world and he would take it as an honor to keep a watch on all of them throughout
the night. Lakshmana replied that they all felt very safe in the kingdom of
Guha. He added that when his brother and Sita were lying on the ground how he
could even think of eating and sleeping. He also shared with Guha some of his
concerns about his old father Dasharatha whom he feared would not have survived
the separation from Rama. Kausalya too would have followed suit. He said that
his mother perhaps was alive because his brother Shatrughna was there with her.
Lakshmana said that he wondered whether they would ever see their father when
they returned after completing the forest life. The night was spent like that
with Lakshmana lamenting in grief. Guha too was greatly affected and was in
tears.
The next day Rama after the morning ablutions said to Lakshmana that they should cross Ganga which was rushing to join the sea. Guha brought the best boat and loaded their belongings. Then they were ready to depart when Sumantra requested Rama what he should do. Rama said to Sumantra, “It is time that you return to Ayodhya without any delay. You should be in the presence of Dasharatha as before and as if nothing had happened”. Sumantra replied weeping that in the absence of Rama they all would feel helpless and would be put to hardships by Kaikeyi. Rama consoled him and said that he was a true friend of the family and he should take good care of the king. Rama said that he should assure the king that they did not feel sorry at all to have abandoned the kingdom for Bharata. Rama wanted Sumantra to convey to his father that soon the fourteen years would be spent and they all would return to Ayodhya safe and sound and would make him happy. Sumantra replied that when the people see the empty chariot that once was decorated by Rama’s presence, they all would break down including himself.

So, he said that he had no mind to
return to Ayodhya and requested Rama to let him accompany them in the forest.
He prayed to Rama to kindly let him stay on in the forest and serve him. He said
that at the end of Rama’s Forest life he himself would drive him in the chariot
back to Ayodhya. Rama appeased Sumantra and told him how important it was for
him to go back at once. Rama said that only after seeing Sumantra back in
Ayodhya, Kaikeyi would believe that Rama really went to the forest. Besides,
Sumantra also could assure the king and Kausalya about the welfare of Rama in
the forest.
Rama then asked for the milk of the Banyan tree (if a branch is broken a kind of milk will ooze out) in order to apply on their heads to get matted hair (hair stuck together like rope, called jadai in Tamil), which is a must for a sanyasi. Once they all were ready Sita was helped into the boat and Rama and Lakshmana also got in. Rama asked the boatmen to cross the river, Ganga. Sita prayed to Ganga to protect them and reach them safely at the other bank. She also prayed that they complete their forest life safely and return to Ayodhya. As the boat moved away from sight Sumantra turned his face and wiped his tears.

When the boat reached the southern bank of Ganga
all got down and Rama asked Lakshmana to be vigilant as they were in a dense
forest and asked him to lead Sita and Rama. They halted near a big tree to
spend the night. They hunted three deers and one wild boar for their dinner. As
Kshatriyas, eating meat was not forbidden to them. Besides, it is believed that
the habit of not eating meat started perhaps after Buddha.
