In the previous chapter we saw How Dasaratha's plans are shattered by Kaikeyi's Plot, Now we'll see Kaikeyi orders, Rama, to renounce the crown and go to the forest.
Sumantra saw Rama’s palace which was like the sun and the moon, as tall as Mount Meru, with large doors, and several golden statues decorating the façade. He saw garlands of diamonds and precious stones hung everywhere, the smell of sandal paste was coming from the palace, swans and peacocks were flying hither and thither, kolams (rangoli patterns) decorated the front of the place and a huge crowd of people had gathered in front with their gifts for the prince. As he walked along he heard all those assembled talking in praise of Rama and he felt happy. He then entered the palace and reached the quarters of Rama. He was so thrilled and pleased to see Rama seated along with his wife Sita (Valmiki again uses the simile, moon in presence of the star Chitra). He saluted them and told Rama that his father who was with Kaikeyi wanted to see him. Rama told Sita that Kaikeyi his mother who was ever so kind to him perhaps wanted to give some final instructions and therefore he would go at once to meet his father. Sita replied that she would wait and pray to Indra in the East, Yama in the South, Varuna in the West, and Kubera in the North to protect him. Rama accompanied by Lakshmana who was holding the white silk umbrella as a protection from the sun, followed Sumantra to meet his father, on the way greeting all those who had assembled there to see him. Several thousand riding the horse and the elephants also followed Rama’s chariot.
As they rode along the royal path
so many people who were standing along the path and those who were on their
balconies all hailed Rama. Valmiki describes in great beauty how Rama rode
along the royal path, how he admired the well-decorated city of Ayodhya, and how
he was pleased with the good feelings of the people. He went in a clockwise
direction (circumambulation, pradakshinam) around the sacred place where there
was the Fire Altar (Yaga Sala) and where the ceremony was to take place and
also around all the Brahmins assembled there to perform the Yaga. When he
reached the front of Kaikeyi’s palace he got down and walked to reach the
interior. The people who had gathered were so pleased to have had a glimpse of
Rama and they stayed on for his return as one would wait to admire the moon
rise. When Rama entered the royal apartments of Kaikeyi he saw his father
seated along with Kaikeyi. But his face showed that he was in deep sorrow. Rama
first saluted Kaikeyi and then his revered father. Dasharatha’s eyes were swollen
with tears and all he could say was “Rama”. He could not even open his eyes.
Rama was very much perturbed to see his father in such a state of sorrow and
was unable to guess the reason. So he asked Kaikeyi whether he had offended his
father in any way and without his knowledge and urged her to tell him the cause
of his father’s sorrow. He said that if he only knew the reason he would at
once find a remedy for it. Kaikeyi without least bothering about the terrible
nature of her demand she had made to her husband told Rama that the king was
not all angry and no one had done anything wrong to him. But there was
something in his mind that was disturbing him and he did not know how to
express it to his dear son Rama. She told Rama that the king had promised to grant
her two wishes but he was trying to go back on that and thereby bringing shame
to the family. She told Rama that if he would assure her that he would obey her
orders unfailingly then she would let him know the details. Rama assured her he
would certainly obey her orders and said that he was prepared to drink poison
or jump into the sea or in the fire if she so desired. He said that he would never
fail to obey his father who was his first guru for he had given him the
“Brahmopadesha” during the sacred thread ceremony (Upanayanam).

Kaikeyi told Rama about the war
that took place a long time ago between Devas and Asuras in which Dasharatha
had fought on the side of Devas. She said that the king got wounded and she
saved his life. She added that his father was so pleased that he had granted
her two wishes to be asked whenever she wanted. So according to those she
wanted Rama to spend nine plus five years (as expressed by Valmiki) in a forest
and Bharata to be crowned in place of Rama. She ordered that Rama should renounce
the coronation ceremony and dress like a hermit and go to the Dandakaranya
forest and let Bharata rule Ayodhya enjoying all the pleasures of the palace.
She said that by doing so he would be executing the wishes of his father.
Hearing this Rama was neither in the least perturbed nor unhappy at all but the
king became sadder.
