Description of Rama’s qualities - Chapter 1

Starting Of Ayodhya Kanda

Valmiki describes all the great and good qualities of Rama in as many as fifty verses. He was the abode of all the good qualities and as for defects he had none. After all, he was the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and he descended to the earth to establish dharma and righteousness and set an example to all. Some of the attributes of Rama as given by Valmiki in the order it appears in the chapter; very handsome, very brave, no jealous feelings, always cool and calm, never hurt anyone even if he is hurt by them, all his spare time he spends discussing with learned men always spoke the truth, spoke sweetly, no pride at all, very well learned, obedience to his parents, loved by all the people in the country, protector of the poor and the weak, a person who won the anger, loved all the animals, listened to all, speaker of sweet words, healthy, bright, well-read in the Vedas, expert in archery and warfare, kept his word at any cost….. Rama also knew all the intricacies of music and musical instruments (flute, veena). Valmiki says that in his patience Rama was like Bhooma Devi (Mother Earth), in his knowledge like Bruhaspati (Guru of the Devas), and in valor like Indra the chief of the Devas.

Lord Rama

Dasharatha was in bliss looking at Rama as he grew. He was in full admiration of his dearest son. With the passing of time, he started thinking about his old age, death, and so on and desired that he should crown Rama before long.

This is the beginning of the real story of Rama and his mission in this world, which of course was probably not realized by king Dasharatha.

Dasharatha sent for all the kings in the neighborhood countries, his ministers, and the citizens and addressed them to share his thoughts. There was such a spontaneous response in favor from all of them and the noise raised by all in joy. Valmiki says that the reverberations were so powerful that the seven floored palace trembled like in an earthquake. Dasharatha was moved but then he asked the assembly whether they approved of his suggestion because perhaps they were not satisfied with his ruling and wanted to get rid of him. The assembly of people assured him that it was the qualities of Rama that made them accept the suggestion. Dasharatha then consulted his guru Vashishtha who gave his accord. The king was in such a hurry to perform this crowning ceremony that it was fixed to take place the next day which turned out to be auspicious because the moon would be in the star Pushya (Poosam as it is called). Dasharatha repeats this so many times and one could feel his eagerness and impatience to make Rama the crown prince. Dasharatha then requested Vashishtha to make all the preparations necessary from the religious aspect.

Dasharatha then sent Sumantra to fetch Rama in order to inform him. Soon Rama arrived in his chariot driven by Sumantra, got down from it and walked up to King Dasharatha’s court, and stood with due respect. Dasharatha drank his beauty as he approached and was so pleased to have been blessed with such a son. He hugged Rama and informed him of his wish to make him the crown prince and the ceremony would take place the next day morning. He gave some advice to Rama on that occasion as to how a king should behave and what should be his qualities. He particularly mentions about seven bad things (Dosha) to be avoided by a king.

These seven defects are the desire for another man’s wife, gambling, hunting by breaking the rules, drinking alcohol at the noon, too much talking, over punishing for a crime, and mindless spending of wealth.

Dasharatha also asked Rama to remember to follow these rules and thereby please his people and his ministers. Hearing this happy news some rushed immediately to inform the queen Kausalya who was so pleased that she distributed gifts to them very generously. The court dispersed and all returned to their homes rejoicing the news.

Dasharatha was again alone and he pondered. Suddenly he felt the need to see Rama again and sent for him. Rama was perplexed but came immediately. Dasharatha hugged him again and made him sit. He sort of opened his heart to his son. Dasharatha told Rama that he has lived long enough and had accomplished many things. It was time to hand over his reign to his son Rama whom he got by God’s blessings. He was sad to continue that he had been seeing some bad omens; He dreamt of a big burning log of wood falling with a thunderous noise and other bad omens. Also according to the Jyotishas (Astrologers), he was under the bad influence of the grahas (planets), Sun, Mercury, and Rahu (a shadow planet that is in our system) which would predict even his death. So he said that he was in a hurry and wanted to see Rama as a crown prince before something happened to him. (Alas Dasharatha could not realize his wish however great and powerful emperor he was!). Again he mentioned that the star the next day Pushya should be crowned without any delay. He also asked him to observe that night vow of celibacy, sleep on a bed of grass (darbha) and meditate upon God. Valmiki uses the word Niyataatmana and not any particular word to denote God. But it is translated as meditating upon God.

Dasharatha also felt sad that Bharata was away at that moment and so could not be present but he said that Bharata was a very good soul and he would understand. Then he gave permission to Rama to go. Rama went and saw his mother and found her in the company of Sita, Lakshmana, and his mother Sumitra. Kausalya was praying to Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi (Shree) to bless her son. Rama announced to her mother about his coronation and took her blessings. He told Lakshmana that he was his dearest brother and said that he would share with him the tasks of ruling the country.

Vashishtha

Vashishtha who was sent by Dasharatha then came to Rama and instructed him about the preliminary preparations to be done that night for the ensuing ceremony the next day morning. As Vashishtha came out of Rama’s palace he found a sea of people who had assembled there. He found that all the people were so happy that Rama was to be crowned. All the streets were well decorated and flags were flying everywhere. Valmiki says that Vashishtha had to edge his way amongst people who had gathered awaiting the sunrise of the next day so as to witness the great ceremony. As for Rama he performed a homam and prayed to Lord Narayana and meditated upon Him for a long time. He slept only
for a short while and got up early and started the morning ablutions.

In all the houses there was an atmosphere of festivity and everyone talked about the crowning ceremony that was to take place. The children too rejoiced and played in front of the houses. The vocalists and musical instruments all gave out sweet music. The streets were perfumed by the burning incense. There were many lamps on the posts illuminating the whole place. People from distant villages had also arrived to participate in that great ceremony. People were happy that they were going to be ruled by a person such as Rama who cared so much for his subjects. They also felt grateful to the king Dasharatha who had thought of crowning Rama and wished him long life. Valmiki thus makes us live in those joyous moments through his vivid description of so many details.

In the Next Chapter, we'll see Dasharatha’s plans are shattered by Kaikeyi’s plot
