Protecting the Yaga - Chapter 16

The next day morning the Yagas started and both the brothers guarded the Ashram day and night. For five days, everything went off smoothly. On the sixth day, a very loud noise was heard in the sky and two huge figures appeared. They were Mareecha and Subahu. They created a rain of blood, which fell all over the place making it dirty. Rama and Lakshmana saw the two rakshasas descending from the skies. Rama asked his brother to watch how he was going to send the Manvastra and kill them.

He sent it to the chest of Mareecha who was thrown to a distance of 100 Yojanas (about 1300 km) and fell into the sea but did not kill him. He is destined to come again and meet with his death at the hands of Rama later. Subahu was killed by Ajnyeya Astra and also Rama who employed the Vayu Astra killed all the other rakshasas who came along. All the rishis were very pleased that they could complete their ceremony peacefully and they blessed Rama. Vishwamitra told Rama that he was very pleased that Rama could restore the peace in Siddhashram. They all spent the night peacefully and happily there.
