Vedic Wisdom - Secret of Creation

Secret of Creation

In fact Devi Mahatmyam and Devi Bhagavatam has gone even deeper to explain the secrets of the creation, universe and the God head which I will briefly state here.

When the parabrahmam desired to create the universe the parasakthi who is his twin – the second side of the God head- emerged from him and projected three fundamental forces- ichcha, jnynana, kriya shaktis; Durga, Lakshmi and Sarawati – the positive energies. Now she also projected the negative field –Narayana- purusha-since without interaction of positive and negative fields no energy can be created.

The interaction of this purusha and the energy nodes resulted in the emergence of the creator - brahma, his power- Sarawaty; the protector-Vishnu, his power-Mahalakshmi; the destroyer-samhara and his power-Parvaty.

Then Brahma started creation but he could not create and so he came to Parasakti and told her his problem. Parasakti – taught him , as taught to her by parabrahman , the secret of creation-the Pranava mantra – the primordial vibration.

With this Brahma started the creation, but whatever was produced did not survive and so again he was before Parasakti. She said he will ask Vishnu to protect whichever is being produced. With this the beings stayed but nothing died resulting in the world full with beings young and old and in fact very old because nothing ever died. Brahma and Vishnu did not know what to do and so they were before Parasakti again. She said fine I will ask Samhara to weed out decayed elements.

Samhara said it is a sin and so I can’t do it arbitrarily and I need ground rules laid and therefore the Parasakthi enunciated the eternal rules – the dharma – and asked Samhara to now take care. Samhara agreed with one condition that he will oversee the annihilation but she should appoint a dedicated administrator to keep account of the individual’s deeds since it is on the basis of that only justice has to be rendered.

Parasakti agreed and appointed Yama for that post of administering. Yama was reluctant because he felt that whatever may be a person’s deeds or misdeeds he is not willing to take anybody’s life out by
himself because it is an unpardonable sin. But he is willing to take care of the administration if on their own, the beings are to die . Parasakti agreed and said she would enunciate a rule of health and diseases and only those who are going to die out of the diseases whether physical, psychic and karmic
he has to handle.

Accordingly the rules of bodily diseases based on eating, breathing and drinking habits; psychic diseases arising out of intoxication; lust; greed; jealousy etc., and karmic diseases because of bad thoughts, words and deeds were set up. So depending upon the upkeep of body and mind human beings develop diseases and only when somebody is ‘metaphysically dead’ Yama picks him up. That is why in Bhagawad Gita Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that whom all he is going to kill are all already dead and therefore he is not going to do anything to them afresh.

Now there was a need to have somebody who will be the embodiment of dharma so that a reference point for verification and cross verification is possible. Parashakti asked Rishabha to be the representation of Dharma. Rishabha agreed , but made a request that ultimately since everything is going to be administered in his name, he will be the most cursed person and so he would like to be protected by her. She said not to worry – you will be the vahana when me and shiva are seated together.

Then Parasakti told Parameshwara her promise to Rishabha; the God was mightily pleased. He said we are so intertwined as two sides of the coin and so the beings are able to see only one of us at a time and I have been always contemplating of the possibility of an occasion whereby they can see both of us at the same time and get blessed. Now Rishabha by his request has made that happen.( Incidentally this is why, while in most of the Vishnu temples we see the God and the Goddess together – either as a moolavar or utsavar- in Shiva temples it won’t be generally so ; they will be only in separate sannadhis).God in order to address this gave darshan as Ardha Nareeshwara but there too it was possible only in ardha (half) form only – not poorna form ).

But, Shiva continued, we have a constraint since we both of us so much immersed in our respective duties of ‘lokakshemam’ we may not have as much time as we want to give that darshan and therefore we have to choose the right muhurta, so that even if it is for a limited time the people can make the best use. Parasakti said I know what is the potential of this rare and special darshan which will bestow peace and prosperity, and redeem whatever may be one’s karma . Therefore I will choose the ‘ muhurtam of pradosham’ (which falls on the evening of dwadashi/trayodashi ) because it was on this muhurta you consumed the poison emanated from the churning of the milky ocean and was lying unconscious on my lap after I stopped the poison at your throat level and prevented it from travelling beyond and I know how much I prayed for my ‘mangalyam’ at that time to you and you blessed it to me; I always think that I got that blessing because I was fortunate I was with you at that time. Even now I can feel those moments. I also know that, those anxious moments I had to undergo because of the curse I earned from you when I ignored your advise during the Daksha Yajna.

Parasakti continued, the prayer at that auspicious hour, cured my curse that too which I earned from you, and blessed me with relief from an unimaginable threat and bestowed unlimited joy to me. Therefore I would recommend that time and whoever prays at that time they will be blessed with peace and prosperity. Shiva said she has aptly chosen the muhurtha and added that, that muhurtam has also another significance - the Narashimha avatara when Vishnu annihilated Hranya Kashija. So You , me and Rishaba (the avatara of Vishnu) will beyond doubt bless everybody and added that we will be called ‘Rishabharudha’ during this darshan.

They therefore say, to be in sync with nature, we have to be with pure mind so that all these powers can manifest fully and we can enjoy the bliss in totality. Now to ensure that beings, particularly human beings to be pure and continue to be pure, several booster deities and mantras were identified and the most ideal and the best booster identified is Rishabharudha. Like everything rare is scarce, this darshan is also restricted to just one muhurta of a paksha. While the manifested darshan is so restricted the atma puja can be carried on everyday, similar to, while deity of a temple can be seen only from a few metres when we go in for a darshan, the Gopuram can be seen from several kilometers away. That is why there is a saying ‘gopura darshanam kodi punniyam’ (worshipping a gopuram bestows limitless blessings)

We can go on listing several such profound statements in the Vedic literature but we don’t have space to cover those details in totality. But from the basic points we have highlighted it can be seen with absolute clarity that there is no area in the universe which Vedas have not covered. That is why it becomes a total science. To put it in a nutshell they understood everything from the smallest ‘anu’ to the biggest space ‘akasha’ .
