Bhagavad Gita is considered to be the essence of the Upanishads and so it will be in order to understand the essence of the Bhagavad Gita.

Separate your intellect from the three gunas – serenity, activity and dullness; disidentify it from three bodies-physical, psychic and causal ; and be a witness to the three states – waking, dreaming and deep sleep. Then your individual self and the supreme self will become one and the same.

Essence of Yoga Vashishtha:

This scripture is the pinnacle of the cosmic wisdom –the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad gita etc., It is a dialogue between Lord Rama and Sage Vashishta when Rama was very young at about the age of 16. Rama, like Buddha, became disgusted seeing the human sufferings and wanted to give up throne and become an ascetic. (This aspect of Lord Rama or this portion of Ramayana is not elaborately discussed in public domain) Dasaratha got worried and at that time co incidentally Sage Viswamithra came there to request Dasharatha to send Rama with him to conquer the asuras who are impeding his sacrifice. Dasharatha told him about the mental state of Rama and asked for Viswamitra’s guidance. Viswamitra said Sage Vashishtha will be the right person to handle this and accordingly sage Vashishta was requested to come. Then Rama was invited to join. Sage Vashishtha wanted Rama to express his apprehensions so that he (Vashsishtha) can clarify them.

Then it is a dialogue between Rama and Vashishtha where Rama puts forth all his metaphysical dilemmas and Vashishtha answers and claries each one of them through a host of stories of profound significance. It is a vast literature consisting of over 70000 verses.

The essence of this can be summed up as under:

The atman is different from body, mind, senses and prana. It is blissful, sinless, formless, eternal, non dual, supreme and pure. It is within you and you are animated by that only. The moment this realization dawns on you, you are liberated, instantly right in this birth itself. For achieving this there is no need to renounce anything of what is yours,

If you are in constant meditation of your atman, your mind will be purified and your ignorance will be uprooted along with the past tendencies, just as when you take medicines daily your ailments vanish, and when your mind therefore becomes pure you will enjoy unalloyed bliss.

The moment one realizes the truth of the unity between the personal self (atman) and the Universal self (paramatman), whether by way of instruction from spiritual guru or by reading spiritual scriptures or by self enquiry and intuition, that very moment the source of ignorance along with the cause and effect ( the neisence and karmic bondage) will vanish and the atman is set free i.e., liberated (attained moksha).

For this one need not look for solitude or vanavas or sanyas or negation of any realities. This is the state of psychic evolution and for this abdication of anything in the world is not required at all.
