What do you make of it in a plain reading-?

“Put up a fire pan, call some deity by name Ashwin ,pour the clarified butter from your home and ask Indra to come and offer him the intoxication drinks and ask him to remove the night as we are terrified by the darkness and pray to him for the dawn come and plead him to give us cows.”

How mundane and in fact rudimentary? If this is what is contained in the Vedas what is so great about Vedas. It is looking like a current day barter system.

We need to ask ourselves again and again – is this the meaning of this verse. Unfortunately many people have accepted the above as the real meaning of the Vedas and instituted a set of rituals. Sad and pathetic. We can only feel sorry for their utter ignorance.

We have understood already that each of these words have another meaning in that ancient language and if we construct the above verse with those meanings we will get the real wisdom. ‘Agni’ means ‘Firm will’; ‘Ashwin’ means vital life force (prana); ‘ghrtam’ means ‘Noble thoughts”;’Indra’ means ‘Super mind’; ‘Soma’ means ‘Bliss; ‘rath’ means ignorance; ‘ushash’ means ‘intellect’ and ‘go’ means ‘Wisdom’.

Now you construct the meaning and See how it looks like: “Invoke your firm will ; activate your vital forces and generate noble thoughts. You will start seeing the super mind which will make bliss to flow all around you and your fear of ignorance will melt and your intelligence will rise and you will be blessed with wisdom.” How mighty it is – with firm will, assemble all your vital forces, keep developing your noble thoughts; your mind will become a super mind and you will gain the divine wisdom and you will be enjoying the uninterrupted bliss.

Similarly Vedas mean by the word sacrifice a ‘sacred deed’ which is being done constantly by the natural forces viz., the cosmic powers for creating, sustaining and disintegrating the universe. It says that Sun, Sky, Earth, Water, Fire, Moon and every conceivable God is doing only this. For example Sun draws water from earth by evaporation; condenses it into clouds; with the help of wind, the sky rains it back on the earth.

Earth with its own potentialities and with the help of Sun and Moon produce food which nourishes the living organisms and this goes on eternally. This sacrifice - of sharing your potentialities for the welfare of the cosmos- is the real meaning of sacrifice that is expected out of all beings. In this whole exercise none of the forces –Sun, Moon, Earth, Wind, Sky, Fire, Rain, or Water gain anything for them.

They all perform these activities eternally for benefitting the beings simply as their ‘divine duties’ The trees give fruits; plants give flowers; cows give milk etc., which are the natural sacrifices which is inbuilt into the cosmic order. Similarly man is expected to share what he has and that is what is sacrifice is in accordance to Vedas. While the internal and spiritual sacrifice is the core of the cosmic duty the external sacrifice has also a science behind it. The branch of Vedas - ‘mimamsa’ deals with it in detail. We will see later the energy field concept and the mantras field effect. We will also see that with specific mantras, specific energy fields can be invoked and activated. Therefore in an external sacrifice when with proper intonation, when proper mantras are recited the specific energy field manifests which can cure several psychic ailments. When along with that, if the right herbs with right other ingredients are poured into fire, it emanates several atmospheric vibrations which has a curative effect at the body level also. To achieve these objectives right mantras, right intonation, right materials are a pre requisite.

It is a well publicized fact that during the Bhopal gas disaster there was one family who remained totally unaffected because the ‘agnihotram’ practice was performed every day in that house and as a result there was a protective field which even such a monumental disaster could not pierce.

Similarly Vedas talk of ‘Seven Realms’ - it is Sound, Light, Particulate, Molecular, Atomic, Nuclear and Sub particle.Seven is a mystic and divine number in Vedas-seven rays, seven colours, seven chakras, seven realms, seven states of consciousness, seven swaras, seven oceans, seven hills, seven rishis, seven planets etc.,That is why many temples have seven doors and the most famous temple ‘Tirupati Balaji Temple’ is called temple of Seven Hills.
