Vedic Literature and Classification

The Vedic verses are sedate out-pouring of intellectual minds in quest of God. They reveal very clearly the nature of man, the Universe, and God. 

From this intuition they evolved the most perfect language in the world, Sanskrit, with a scientific alphabet and perfected vocabulary. Vedas also explains the Earth’s dual motions, the courses of constellations and stars, the twin sciences of astronomy and astrology. They also elaborate the system of medicine for the welfare of the body, the science of Yoga for the health care of the mind, the Tantra Shastra to develop the psychic and esoteric forces latent in man’s being, the Dharma Shastras to guide man’s conduct in society, Grihya Sutras to guide the conduct of house-holders, Mimamsa, prescribing sacrificial lore for the attainment of individual and national prosperity, the laws of sanitation, town-planning, architecture, sculpture , the principles of music,  dancing, state-craft, the art of war .

Vedas glorify the nature since nature is the starting and ending point of the universe. Gods are representing the forces of nature and not any individualized person. The personified forces as mentioned in the Vedas are:

Rta - the natural law of the cosmic order and morality -the regulator of the whole cosmos.

Dyaus- sky;

Prithvi- earth;

Varuna- the water God

Indra-the protector of Rta;

Savitri, Mitra and Pushan- representing the different powers of the Sun such as heat, light and nourishment.

Vishnu -the symbol of swift movement 

Rudra –the storm 

Maruts- the wind

Vayu and Vata - the other forms of winds

Parjanya - was the God of rain.

Agni -firm will and fire

Soma - bliss and rarified mind was regarded as essential for sacrifice.

Saraswati - knowledge (ever evolving and never stagnant)- as river Goddess on earth.

But the most loved Goddess was Ushash (Dawn) - the wisdom belonging to both earth and heaven.

All these powers were identities in cosmos as well as its double in the beings. So when Vedas say something we need to look at it from macrocosmic as well as microcosmic aspects to understand the full and correct meaning.
