The primordial Lord Ganesha, the lord of hosts, the remover of obstacles known and adored by various names throughout India and world, is worthy of first worship-Adipujya. This prime position was accorded to Him by all the deities, unison. The birth of Ganesha is found narrated in various Puranas, Ganesha and Mudgala make special and elaborate mention of it.

Once Parvati had requested Nandi to keep watch at the doorstep as she went to bath within the caves of Kailasa. But when Lord Shiva appeared at the door, Nandi was unable to stop his master and silently let him pass. Parvati was embarrassed at the sight of Shiva, who merely laughed at her plight. Parvati decided to have Her own attendant, who would report to none but Herself. She fashioned a young boy from the turmeric paste, she had kept aside after her bath.

This image was infused with life and turned into a handsome youth, with exuberating energy. She gave him the same task of keeping watch over the entrance, and also gave him a staff in his hand. When Shiva approached the cave chambers, He was denied entry into the cave by the youth. Angered by the impudence, Shiva returned and sent his hosts lead by Nandi to make the boy see reason. But the boy was firm on his stand that, none shall enter until his mother Parvati allows entry. In the tussle that followed, the hosts were beaten black and blue and they rushed to narrate their woes to Shiva. Now all the celestials, Vishnu, Brahma, Indra joined the group to deter the boy, but of no avail. The boy politely but firmly refused to drop his guard. A fierce battle followed, but armed with Parvati’s divine powers, the boy was able to defeat all the celestials. 

At last Shiva himself entered to fight the battle and cut off the head of the boy with his trident. When Parvati came to know about this incident, she was furious. Enraged at the impudence of the devas, She unleashed her Shaktigana, who caused havoc on the Devas, Trembling with fear, they all approached Parvati and asked for Her forgiveness. But she was not in a benign mood, and refused to entertain their request, until Her son was revived. Shiva asked for the head of the first being the devas see in north direction to be cut and brought. 

Devas brought the head of an elephant and thus was the boy revived with the head of an elephant. Hence called Gajamukha, Gajaanana etc., As a repentance, all the deities bestowed upon Him the status of Adipuja i.e., who would be worthy of first worship. Shiva made him the head of his hosts, hence called Ganesha. He was bestowed with special powers to dispel impediments in the path to success, hence Vighneshvara.

It is said that the Pandavas who were in exile had performed this chaturthi vrata and as a result of their observance they were able to getback their lost kingdom. Anyone who performs this Vrata puja with sincerity would receive the blessings of Lord Ganesha in the form of health, wealth and prosperity.

Many puranas have spoken of the benefits acquired by many such as Manmatha, Dakhsa, Nala, King Kardama etc., who were benefited by the observance of this Vrata.

Ganesha has been lauded as the physical form of the Primordial sound – “Om”. Hence, He is regarded as Primordial Lord who is the cause of creation, sustenance and destruction of the world in Ganesha and Mudgala Purana.

Chaturthi was the date of Ganesha’s manifestation, hence it is celebrated with all fanfare throughout India. This festivity acquires a new dimention in Maharashtra, wherein the Utsava continues for ten days, and the huge idols of Ganesha is immersed in water bodies on the Ananta Chaturdashi Day, tenth day following Ganesha chaturthi.

There is also a legend that Ganesha comes every year to escort his mother Parvati, who comes to her parental home(Home of every devotee) for accepting Svarna-Gauri Puja. Since Gauri is invoked in a bag of sand, an earthern image of Ganesha is worshipped, and together they depart to Kailasa; ready to come the following year to bless their devotees.

Ganesh Chaturthi commemorates the birthday of Lord Ganesh. On this day, beautiful handcrafted idols of the Lord are installed both in homes and in public. Prana Pratishtha is performed to invoke the power of the deity into the idol, followed by a 16 step ritual known as Shodashopachara Puja. During the ritual, various offerings including sweets, coconuts, and flowers are made to the idol. The ritual should be performed at an auspicious time around midday, known as Madhyahna, when Lord Ganesh is believed to have been born.

It's important, according to tradition, not to look at the moon during certain times on Ganesh Chaturthi. If a person sees the moon, they'll be cursed with accusations of theft and dishonored by society unless they chant a certain mantra.

Apparently, this came about after Lord Krisha was falsely accused of stealing a valuable jewel. Sage Narada said that Krishna must've seen the moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi and was cursed because of it. Furthermore, anyone who saw the moon then would be cursed in a similar way.

The idols of Lord Ganesh are worshiped every day, with an aarti in the evening. The largest Ganesh statues, on display to the public, are usually taken out and immersed in water on Anant Chaturdasi. However, many people who keep an idol in their homes carry out the immersion much before this.
