Srimad Ramayana

Yuddha Kanda

Rama carefully listened to Anjaneya and realized only Anjaneya is capable of completing such a difficult task; Rama embraced Anjaneya. Now Rama was concerned how to cross the Sea. Sugriva said to Rama we now have to focus primarily on finding Sita. Sugriva prepared an army of Monkeys. Rama gave permission to leave. They arrived at the Seashore and established resting places for everyone inside a Forest nearby. Rama, Lakshmana and Sugriva started thinking how to cross the Sea. In the meantime, due to the havoc done by Anjaneya, Lanka was in shambles. Also, Ravana learned that Sugriva’s army has arrived at the other shore and was confused.

He wanted to hear from his Ministers how to handle the situation. Everyone echoed the same thing – there is no one that exists to challenge you in the three Worlds. No one was concerned about the safety of Lanka except Ravana’s second brother Vibhishana. He said – you stole and brought Rama’s Wife Sita to Lanka. Rama is not invading Lanka. He has come to get His Wife Sita from you. Hanuman came to Lanka to caution us of further danger ahead. The proper thing to do now is to make peace with Rama and return His Wife Sita to Him. Ravana’s other younger Brother Kumbhakarna was not present because he was sleeping. He sleeps five months and wakes up only one month. Ravana ordered to wake up his Brother. Kumbhakarna also advised Ravana he should win a war against Rama and then should have brought Sita and he too asked Ravana to return Sita to Rama. However, he said he will support his Brother by fighting against Rama. Vibhishana emphasized we are inviting Lanka’s destruction. Ravana’s Son Indrajit got angry at his uncle’s opinion and said he is a coward. Vibhishana said you are young and do not have experience to handle the situation. Ravana got extremely angry and asked his Brother to leave from his sight.

Vibhishanna warned Ravana that his end is nearing, took his close associates and left by air towards north to Rama’s camp for asylum. Sugriva informed Rama about Vibhishana’s arrival. This caused confusion in Rama’s camp. Some started suspecting he is Ravana’s spy, some said he should be interrogated, some said it is good to invite him to join our team to get inside secrets of Ravana. After hearing everyone, Rama said if someone does Saranagathy to Me (surrender), I will accept him – He asked Sugriva to bring Vibhishana to Him. Rama asked Vibhishana what was the reason he left Lanka and Vibhishana said he did not agree with his Brother Ravana bringing Sita to Lanka and keeping Her as a prisoner. Also, he assured he will help Rama with sacrificing everything he knows. Having convinced, Rama welcomed Vibhishana and ordered Sugriva and Lakshmana to do Pattabisheka and promised to win against Ravana and make him King of Lanka. Vibhishana did not welcome this but said he is only interested in saving Lanka’s destruction. Now they gathered to decide how to cross the Sea. Vibishana suggested to pray to the Sea-God Varuna. Everyone agreed.

Ravana sent a Messenger Suka to Sugriva with the intention of creating friction between Sugriva and Rama. The message to Sugriva is – we both are neighbors. Rama was driven away from His Kingdom and he is not capable of taking care of His Wife Sita. You leave Rama and go back to Kishkinda. Sugriva replied – Me and Rama are good friends and you are our enemy. You carried away Rama’s wife Sita. Rama is going to get rid of you soon from this World. However, Rama kept Suka in safeguard in His camp for now with the intention that his work is not done yet.

Rama prayed to Varuna for three days but Varuna did not pay any heed to Rama’s prayers. Now Rama woke up and said you do not heed my prayers but you will answer this arrow and  sent an arrow with Mantra-Sakti into the Sea. Rightaway Varuna appeared shaking and said “O Ramachandra, I will help you to build a bridge over the waters. Take the help of Nalla in your Army to build the Bridge”. Nalla started this task. A Bridge was built in five days to Lanka land.
Quickly they set up a Camp on the other side. Now Suka was released and he was asked to explain what all happened. Now two demons disguised as Monkeys entered Sugriva’s camp - Vibishanna recognized them – however, Rama pardoned them and even arranged to provide the details they needed. These people explained details to Ravana and requested him to make peace with Rama and release Sita. However, Ravana drove them away.

While Rama was planning the Lanka invasion strategy, Ravana was involved in tricking Sita. He told Her that his Army destroyed Sugriva’s Army and said he killed Rama. According to his plan, one of his Ministers brought Rama’s face to Sita. During this Episode, Ravana had to leave for some urgent work. While Sita was believing what She saw and became extremely shocked, she was consoled right away by a demoness Sarama that what she saw is not true and this was Ravana’s maya trick. Ravana’s Father-in-Law Malyava is the elderly Statesman of Ravana’s family. He said to Ravana that he is able to see several indications for Lanka’s destruction and advised him to return Sita to Rama and make Peace with Him. He ignored him.

Ravana went to the highest land in his Palace to check out the enemy’s strength. On another peak, Rama and Sugriva were present and saw Ravana. Suddenly, Sugriva appeared and attacked Ravana and kicked his crown on the floor. Big fight ensured between them. By the time Ravana planned to adopt some magical tactics, Sugriva rushed back to Rama. Rama was upset with Sugriva’s act. Sugriva said he got excited seeing Ravana.

Rama sent Angada as a Messenger to Ravana. He said, “I am the Son of Vali whom you remember and narrated the Message of Rama to Ravana – Brahma has given you a boon and due to the power you have earned, you are behaving arrogantly. You are giving troubles constantly to Devas, Rishis and Humans. Your Bhuloka Life is coming to an end soon. While I was away from the Panchavati Ashrama for a short while, you stole Sita away. Now you will fight Me and you will not escape My archery. If you want to save your Life, you return Sita to Me and apologize. Your Brother Veebhishana is already crowned as the King of Lanka and your death is imminent.” Ravana was angry and ordered his men to tie Angada. Angada pretended to be caught and as he kicked the four Rakshasas, they all flew and fell on the ground at the sight of Ravana. Angada toppled the Tower of the King’s Palace and successfully returned to Rama.

Ravana got the news that Lanka was surrounded on all sides by army of Monkeys and Bears. He went and surveyed the situation. The Monkeys were holding big, big Stones and big, big Trees as Weapons. He wondered how he could destroy this vast invading force. At this time, Rama saw the Lanka guarded by the Rakshasas. He could see with His mind’s eye the sad figure of Sita held captive within those walls. He ordered an immediate assault. Ravana sent a big Army. Thousands fell dead on either side. The field was covered with blood and mangled bodies. There were many dual engagements. Angada encountered Indrajit, and similarly Hanuman, Neela, Lakshmana fought with their counterparts on the Ravana side. The battle raged throughout the day and continued into the night. Angada attacked Indrajit, slew his horses and Charioteer and smashed the Chariot. Indrajit lost his temper. He made himself invisible and aimed many darts (arrows) at Rama and Lakshmana who were greatly harassed at this attack – attack from a foe whose whereabouts no one could discover. Bound by them, they could not move and lay helpless at the battlefield.

Vanaras stood around in bewilderment. Indrajit returned to the Palace and declared to his Father Ravana that the story of Rama and Lakshmana are over. Ravana embraced his Son and praised his prowness (prudence). The Vanaras concluded all was over. Vibhishana put courage into the Vanara King Sugriva. He said, their faces are still bright – they are not dead. Meantime, Ravana had it proclaimed in Lanka that Rama and Lakshmana have been slained. He sent for his Women to inform Sita that Rama is no more. To convince Her, take her in the Pushpaka Vimana and show her the battlefield from above. When she is convinced, she will agree to come to me. The Rakshasas did as they were told. Sita saw Rama and Lakshmana lying motionless on the ground. She was filled with grief. She thought all is over and cried, to this end the fate has brought Me and this is against the predictions of Astrologers that I would live as a happy Wife and Mother and a glorious Queen. Now Trijata Her Rakshasi companion, suddenly burst out, dear Sita, there is no cause for grief. Neither of them is dead. They are bound by a charmed weapon and are unconscious for a while. Her words fell like nectar in Sita’s ears. The Vimana returned to the Asoka Vana.

After some time, the arrows charged with sorcery (foul or filthy effect) weakened. Rama woke up first and looked at Lakshmana and cried, why did I bring you with Me to the Forest and get you killed like this; how can I return to Ayodya without you and so on. Now Sushena (Sugriva’s uncle) said there are Herbs available that can heal the wounds of the Princes and restore them to health. Just at this time, the Great Bird Garuda arrived and the serpent darts that covered Rama and Lakshmana disappeared instantaneously. They were all venomous serpents which had become arrows through the magic of Indrajit and had bound the Princes’ Bodies. When their enemy Garuda appeared, they took flight. Then Garuda gently stroked the bodies of Rama and Lakshmana and restored them to their full Strength. All the wounds got healed and they rose up stronger and more radiant than before. Ravana heard that the Vanaras are jubiliant again and asked his men to check out the Truth. They returned and said the Vanara army led by Sugriva is attacking the Fortress with Spirit. Rama and Lakshmana are both alive. Ravana was disappointed.

Then Ravana sent his trusted warrior Dhoomraksha and he was slain by Hanuman and many Rakshasas lay dead. Following this news, Ravana sent few other warriors Vajra Damshtra, Akambana, Brihasta and they faced the same fate after fighting. Now, Ravana got extremely concerned because he lost a few of his Trusted War Leaders. This prompted him to get into the Chariot and go to the war himself like Rudra, the destroyer. Vibhishana pointed out to Rama – there comes the Ten Headed Ravana. Rama said, a Great Warrior no doubt, but he is so wicked, he has to be slain. Neela opposed Ravana gallantly but was felled by a fire-dart. Hanuman attacked Ravana with violence and the two fought an equal battle for a while but Ravana could not be subdued. There was a fight between Lakshmana and Ravana. Lakshmana fell down unconscious but Hanuman intervened and carried Lakshmana to Rama. Then Rama riding on Hanuman’s shoulders gave battle to Ravana.

The Rakshasha King was sorely wounded. His golden Crown was broken. So was his Chariot. Deprived of every weapon, he stood before Rama. Rama said – you may go now; you have fought well today; go away and rest and come back tomorrow (the famous Kamba Ramayana Tamil Quote of Rama to Ravana: Inru Poy Nallai Vaa) refreshed and with Weapons; Ravana retreated shamefully. Ravana entered his Fort humbled and dejected.

After deliberating a while, he recovered his courage and ordered his sleeping Brother Kumbhakarna to be awakened. He has gone to sleep just a few days before when he was called to attend the Ministers’ meeting that Ravana assembled. Ravana asked his Ministers to rouse Kumbhakarna at once and get ready for the battle. They knew that if he wakes up he will be very hungry. So they got the food piled up like a Mountain ready for him. The Rakshasas beat drums, blew conches, shook his Body but nothing worked. Now they made Elephants walk on his Body. At last his eyelids opened slightly and yawned. Kumbhakarna was thus disturbed in his sleep which otherwise would have been Months long. He began to eat and drink. The heaps of meat and the pots of wine kept ready for him were finished. When his hunger was somewhat mitigated, the Rakshasas approached him to acquaint him with the war situation. My Lord, we are in grave danger. The Vanaras with Rama and Lakshmana have arrived and are breaking through our Fort. Ravana himself went to the battle but he retired and it is our good luck that he escaped his life. Hearing this, Kumbhakarna said – this very instant I shall go and destroy the enemy. They pleaded he should see Ravana first.

Kumbhakarna entered the Palace and stood in the presence of Ravana. Ravana embraced him. Ravana said, the Man Rama is a real menace to me. The Vanara Army is surrounding Lanka like another Sea. Our Warriors fought and were defeated as well as almost have been annihilated. It is for you now to save us from further destruction and I know you can do it. I know your love for me and your courage in the Battle. Go at once and annihilate these enemies and help us in our need and save Lanka. Kumbhakarna tried again to convince Ravana to return Sita and make Peace with Rama. Ravana did not like this lecturing. His face flushed with Anger. He said, Brother! The time is now past for such talk. The question now is what should we do now in our present predicament. It is your duty now to use your Strength and Skill to ward off the present disasters resulting from the past errors. Out of your infinite courage, give me comfort. Kumbhakarna was moved by this appeal and said, rest assured that Rama and Lakshmana are dead. I shall slay their monkey Army. Kumbhakarna armed with his great Spear was about to go to the War alone but Ravana stopped him and sent an Army to aid him.

Rallied by Angada, the Vanaras recovered coverage and prepared to receive Kumbha-karna. They hurled rocks at him and dealt heavy Trees but he disregarded them all. Hanuman, Neela, Sarabha and other Chiefs attacked Kumbhakarna fiercely. But he disregarded them all and continued his ruthless slaughter of the Vanaras. Angada received a blow, fainted and fell on the ground. Sugriva was struck down. Kumbhakarna carried him with joy to Lanka as a present to Ravana. The Triumph noise of the Rakshasas and their Women folk revived Sugriva. Soon he began to bite with his Teeth and tear with his nails the Ears and Nose of Kumbhakarna. He threw him down on the ground to crush him with his feet. However, Sugriva jumped and flew off across the Sky and arrived near Rama. Kumbhakarna came raging again to the Battlefield. He began to kill the Vanaras. Lakshmana tried with his Arrows to obstruct his progress but the Rakshasa passed him and rushed forward to face Rama Himself. For a long time, Rama kept aiming powerful darts at Kumbhakarna but were powerless. Sending sharper and stronger Arrows, Rama wounded his arms and feet. His legs were cut off. Finally, Rama cut off his head with an Arrow. The news was carried to Ravana. Ravana felt like his own life had left him. After recovering consciousness, he cried in grief and anger: Oh mighty warrior, how could you go to the Yama’s world leaving me behind. With sudden and futile remorse he wailed (meaningful cry) : why did I refuse to listen to Vibhishana.

Next Trisiras (another Son of Ravana) went to the Battlefield. After a great Battle, Angada opposed him and killed him and his horse. Likewise, two other warriors were killed by Neela and Hanumann. Ravana exclaimed I cannot explain the marvel of this Man Rama’s Strength. May it be that He is Narayana Himself? Thus bewildered, Ravana lost heart. Indrajit comforted his Father. Why should you worry when I am here alive. He gathered an Army and swooped down on the Vanara forces and killed and wounded thousands of them. The Brahmastra of Indrajit was effective against Rama and Lakshmana who were tied by it. They lay unconscious. Vibhishana rallied the Vanaras who were scattered. Jambhava who was more like dead than alive moved slowly looking for Hanuman. When he found him, he asked Hanuman to proceed at once to the Himalayan range. Between the Rishabha and Kailasa Peaks there is a hill of herbs. In the hill top are four medicinal Plants. Bring them quickly. Hanuman sprang up in the Air, reached the Hill but could not identify the Plants, so He carried the whole Hill and returned. Rama’s and Lakshmana’s wounds healed and they became strong and stood up.

Taking counsel from Rama, Sugriva chose a few Vanaras and ordered them to set fire to the Lanka City. Towards the midnight they entered the City with torches. They set fire to the Palaces and turrets (Towers) of Lanka. Ravana was furious and he sent Kumbha and Nikumbha (the sons of Kumbhakarna) to the Battlefield. However they were slain by Sugriva and Hanuman. Indrajit went once again to the Battlefield. He rose into the Sky and became invisible. He created a Maya-Sita and putting her in a Chariot, took Her before the Vanara Army and seemingly killed Her in their presence. Deceived by this, Rama left the Battlefield. Now Indrajit gained some time to perform an Asuric (as you think fit) Sacrifice. Vibhishana came and clarified that this is Indrajit’s trick. Ravana would never kill Sita. Also he said, if he completes his Sacrifice, we will not be able to vanquish (conquer) him. Let Lakshmana go at once and mar Indrajit’s Purpose. Accordingly, Lakshmana and Hanuman left. They interrupted the Sacrifice and a long fierce Battle ensured. Ascending the Chariot, Indrajit sent forth his Arrows. Standing on Hanuman, Lakshmana did the same. This Battle lasted long. The Chariot of Indrajit was destroyed by Lakshmana, and both fought standing on the Ground. Atlast, Lakshmana used the Indrastra and uttering the name of Rama discharged the fatal Arrow. The head of Indrajit was severed and fell to the Ground and as it fell it shone like fire. The Devas and Gandharvas showered flowers from the Heavens. Lakshmana was wounded all over and bleeding. Rama seated him on his lap, kissed his head and gave vent to his joy.

The news of Indrajit’s death reached Ravana. When he heard Vibhishana helped in this venture, his grief and anger swelled. He cried, Alas my son, vanquisher of the great Indra. You have entered the Heaven of the heros. I should not grieve. My Son killed the Maya-Sita and I should kill the real Sita who is the cause of this tragedy. However, the Minister Suparsva appealed to Ravana to spare Her Life. Gather your Armies, ascend the Chariot and go to the War. Ravana got convinced Suparsva was right. He was silent and lost himself in profound Meditation. Ravana’s Army went in full force for the Battle. The Vanaras counter attacked them. Rama bent His Bow and sent showers of Arrows. The Rakshasas could not see Rama because of the showers of Arrows. The Rakshasa Army was destroyed.

Ravana issued out of Lanka to the Battlefield. Mighty Rakshasa Warriors followed him. Ravana found himself facing Lakshmana who tried to oppose his progress. Forcing his way past him, Ravana precipitated against Rama with all the pent up fury of hatred and strove to overwhelm him with a spate of Arrows. Rama easily baffled these Arrows with His own. They fought each bent on slaying the other. Rama pierced with his darts every limb of Ravana yet he did not fall. The Lakshmana and Vibhishana together attacked Ravana. Furious with his Brother and determined to kill him, Ravana flung to him a powerful Weapon; but interrupted by a dart of Lakshmana, it broke into two and fell on the Ground. This happened in two attempts. Then he hurled a Sakti at Lakshmana and Lakshmana fell down unconscious on the Ground. Not observing this Rama went on keeping pressure against Ravana. In the meantime, Hanuman was sent again to get the herbs and he did. Lakshmana got revived again and resumed his part in the Battle.

Matali brought his Master Indra’s Chariot to the Battlefield for the use for Rama. Rama bowed to the Gods, circumambulated the Divine Chariot and ascended the Chariot. Then followed a wonderful Battle. Ravana got sorely wounded and fell unconscious – his Charioteer quietly took him out of the Battlefield. Ravana recovered consciousness, got angry at his Charioteer for getting him out of the Battlefield. Every Astra was met by the other. In new and wonderful ways, the two Chariots moved and the two Warriors fought for a Long Time, while both Armies watched the Spectacle with breathless admiration and anxiety. Matali, the Charioteer, whispered into Rama’s ear: Ravana’s end is approaching. Delay no further. May I remind you of the Brahmastra? Rama uttered the Spell and sent the Brahmastra. Though the Rakshasa’s Ten Heads had often been cut off before, they had grown again and baffled Rama. The Brahmastra emitting Flames, went towards Ravana and pierced his Chest, where was enshrined the secret of his invincibility and shattered it. The Bow slipped from the Rakshasa’s Hand and fell down from the Chariot and lay stretched on the Battle-field. The Gods blew their Trumpet. Rama and His Chariot were covered by a heap of Flowers showered from the Heaven. Lakshmana, Vibhishana, Jambava and other Warriors surrounded Rama in Joy and Adoration.

Vibhishana looked at his Brother’s Body, the memories of his boyhood days when Ravana and he had loved and played quite overwhelmed him and he burst into lamentations over his lost Brother. He cried: O Warrior! O Brother of heroic deeds! O Scholar Learned in all the Sastras! O Valiant and Famous King of the Kings! You were surrounded by bad Advisors and you would not heed my Warnings! The worst has happened now! You reaped what you sowed! Rama Spoke: Ravana fought like a True Warrior and fell fighting like a Hero! Death has washed his sins! It calls for no mourning. Ravana has entered Heaven! Thus Rama cleared all confusions from Vibhishana’s Mind and made him do the Funeral Rites for his departed Brother. Your Brother is my Brother too, is he not?

The Women of Ravana’s Palace came to the field to mourn. They led the Queen Mandodari. The Crowned Queen and beloved Wife of Ravana was in utter desolation. She cried, Indra the King of Devas dared not to face your Anger. The Rishis and the Gandarvas at the sight of you fled in fear in all directions. Now a Mere Man, a wanderer in the Forest has brought you down. I do not understand how this could have happened. Truly, fate is all Powerful! Did I not tell you Rama is not a Mere Human Being, but someone greater than Indra. This Rama is no other than Vishnu in Human Form, God without the Beginning, Middle or End. Lamenting thus, Mandodari fell on Ravana’s Body and lay unconscious.

Vibhishana was Crowned King of Lanka in a Magnificent Ceremony. The new Lord came to the Vanara Camp and bowed before Rama. Rama said to Hanuman, with the King’s permission, enter Lanka and tell Sita what has happened. Hanuman took permission from Vibhishana and went to Ashoka Vana to convey the news to Sita. Sita’s Joy was beyond Words. She was Silent. Hanuman asked: why do you not Speak? How can I repay you, My Son? She Answered. None in the World can equal your Wisdom, your Valor, your Patience, your Humility. As She said this Her Eyes were filled with Tears of Gratitude and Affection. Hanuman looked at the Rakshasi Women who had guarded Sita and turning to Sita said: I wish to slay these cruel Women who troubled You. Sita Answered, no My Son. It is the duty of Noble Souls to be compassionate towards All – sinners as well as good people. Sita said I am eager to be in the Presence of Rama.

Hanuman returned and gave an account of his visit. Rama’s face Darkened. He turned to  Vibhishana and said: Ask Sita to bathe and bedeck (decorate) Herself and bring Her here. When Sita heard the Message, She said, I would rather go the way I am. Vibhishana said: not so, Lady – the Prince’s Order should be obeyed. So, Sita bathed and bedecked with Jewels and seated in a Palanquin went to the Camp. When Rama heard Sita was coming He woke up from His Meditation. Rama’s face showed a strange Transformation of Mind. None of those around Him, not even Lakshmana could understand. Sita proceeded towards Rama. Aryaputra! (Loved and Noble One and is an intimate form of address of Wife to Husband), She said and sobbed, unable to speak more. Rama said, I have slain the enemy. I have recovered You. I have done My duty as a Kshatriya. My Vow is fulfilled. Then He spoke even harsher Words. Dubiety (lack of Faith) envelopes You like a dark cloud of smoke. You must live Alone, for We cannot live Together. How can a Kshatriya take back a Wife who has lived so long in a Stranger’s House? Sita’s eyes flashed Fire. She said: You have spoken unworthy Words. My ears have heard them and My heart is broken. Is it My fault that the wicked Rakshasa seized Me by force and imprisoned Me? Turning to Lakshmana, She said, fetch the Wood and kindle a Fire. Obeying Sita, Lakshmana kindled a big Fire. Sita circumambulated Her Lord, and exclaimed: O Agni, I bow before You.

You know my Purity and will take Me as Your own. Then She Jumped into the Flames. The Flames were crowded with Celestial Figures. Brahma Spoke: Narayana! Mightly God took Human Form to slay Ravana. Is not this Your Own Lakshmi? Agni, God of Fire, rose in His Own Body and lifting Sita in His Arms with all Her Clothes and Jewels untouched and intact, presented Her to Rama. Rama said to Brahma: Whom am I? All that I know is, I am son of Dasaratha. You know who I am and it is You who must inform Me. Saying this to Brahma, Rama accepted Sita Fire Proved. He said to Sita: You think I did not know Your Purity? This Ordeal was to satisfy the People. So saying He drew Her to His side.

Dasaratha descended from Above and placing the Prince on His lap, Blessed Him. He said to Sita: My Child, Forgive My Son. Forgive Him for the wrong He did You to Preserve the Dharma of the World. God Bless You. Indra gave his boon and the Vanaras who died in battle for Rama regained their lives. Rama and Sita, now re-united, ascended the Pushpaka Vimana along with all others to Ayodhya. He showed Sita the Causeway built by Nalla, the Kishkinda where He met Sugriva and Hanuman, the spots He and Lakshmana wandered and related their experiences. Alighting at Bharadwaja’s Ashrama, they sent word in advance to Guha and Bharata.

The City of Ayodhya swam in a Sea of Joy. Rama and Bharata met. Bharata Bowed at the feet of Rama. Bharata installed Rama’s Padukas and Administered the Kingdom for fourteen years as a Devotional Exercise. Rama was Crowned as King as his Father had wished. Received from Rama a Pearl Necklace Sita put it around Hanuman’s neck. He saw the smile of a Divine Grace brightening Her face as She did so. This concludes the Yuddha Kanda of Srimad Ramayana and also this concludes the Story of Srimad Ramayana.

Uttara Kanda:
