Gaayatri Mantra

The Gaayatri is a hymn composed in Vedic metre imploring Lord Savita (Sun,the life force of the world) to lead the intellect to right path. It contains 24 letters. The greatness of the hymn, is not asking directly for any material gains, instead asking for guidance of intellect which would reward life. Its importance is explained by many great thinkers.

Gaayatri is considered to be foremost of all mantras and hence it is called Veda Maataa or Guru Mantra meaning eldest among mantras. The greatness of Raamaayana lay in its scheme where its every thousandth verse began with the corresponding letter of Gaayatri Mantra. It is the mantra, any Hindu is first initiated into.

Apart from the Savitru Gaayatri, there are Gaayatris for other deities too in the Mahaa Naaraayanopanishad as well as in many compilations texts such as Mantra Mahodadhi etc.

Meditation on OM

The primordial sound, the sound from which the entire cosmos emanated, the sound which is a perfect combination of the vowels and consonants leading to synthesis of breath for meditation and the sound which stands for the Supreme Self, is AUM.

The sound of AUM is called Pranava as it pervades everything including life & breath. Maandukya Upanishad has unraveling the mystery of AUM as its central theme. AUM consists of letters A,U and M and the resonance of the nasal sound representing the waking state (jaagrat) dreaming state (svapna), deep-sleep state (sushupti) and the fourth state of bliss due to the identity of individual Self with supreme Self (turiya).

AUM is the supreme mantra which energises all mantras. Just as the body has no vitality without the life breath running through the veins so too a mantra has no vitality without the addition of Pranava.

Vedas, Upanishads, Puraanas and many independent treatises have illustrated the greatness of Pranava in great detail.
