Navarathri Day 5 - Skandamata

Day five of Navarathri(Panchami): Goddess Skandamata
Navarathri Day 5
Skandamata = Skanda(Lord Karthikeya) + Mata(Mother) = Lord Kathikeya’s Mother, the one who carries infant Lord Karthikeya in her lap.
Appearance of Goddess Skandamata
The fifth appearance of Goddess Durga on Navarathri Panchami is Goddess Skandamata, mother of Lord Karthikeya. She holds Lord Murugan in his infant form and has four hands. The two upper hands holds lotus and left hands blesses her devotees and protects them from fear and darkness. She has three eyes and bright complexion seated in padmasan hence also called Padmasini. She is also called in other names like Parvati, Maheshwari, Gauri.
Legend of Goddess Skandamata
Demon Tarakasur did great penance and impressed Lord Brahma and asked for a boon of being immortal. When Lord Brahma said no living being can escape death, Tarakasur intelligently said he will die in the hands of Lord Shiva's son since he thought Lord Shiva would never marry.
On getting the boon Tarakasur tormented people on earth and not being able to bear the atrocity all devatas lead by Lord Brahma approached Lord Shiva and advised him to marry Parvati, daughter of King Himavan. Goddess Parvati then gave birth to Lord Karthikeya who later became the war commander of chief for all Devatas and defeated Tarakasur.
This manifestation of Goddess Durga establishes mother & child relationship and showers immense love and affection to her devotees.
